The fight was so one sided and reports of Toney’s extreme weight cut is a shame because it’s hard to rate this win too highly. RJJ may have always beaten Toney at his best anyway but who knows.

I'll add the Hill win as underrated way moreso. Great body shot and Hill was a solid fighter even if he came off a loss to Dariuz, no shame in that loss.

Do you really believe that he was a corpse?

Also, he weighed in at 167.

The best of Toney was the early 90’s.

Anybody can say anything can’t they.

Wilder blamed the weight of his suit.

I do think that James’ weight issues were legit.

However, I don’t think that he was a corpse like some have suggested, and I think it was just a terrible fight for him stylistically.

    I should have been clearer.

James wasn’t scared to fight anybody.

He was happy to sign for it.

But when the date came, he said that he was feeling ill. He said that he was recovering from the flu, but that Kallen pressured him into going ahead with the fight and not postponing it.

It was a terrible stylistic match up for James.

It wasn’t a fast paced fight though.

I’m more than willing to accept that James was nowhere near 100%.

But I just think that the style, and not his weight issues was the biggest problem for him.

Many of Toney’s fights — more than not I’d think — aren’t particularly fast-paced. He wasn’t a hugely high-workrate guy. A lot of time spent in the shell with the other guy throwing, him dodging and throwing often just a single counter.

When Roy engaged him, he was at angles and James often didn’t (or wasn’t able to) fire back.

In that seventh round I referenced, Gil Clancy (I think it was) comments how they’re in the same ring and “Toney can’t find him,” explaining that he’s never right in front of James and after he’d throw he’d slide out to the side. He didn’t, as Gil often phrased it, “wait for the receipt.”

It’s a masterclass performance against one of the P4P best at the time … what we always called a “paint job.”

Wow. You buried the lead: James Toney overturned furniture in his mom’s home, took a gun from the home and went out saying he was going to kill his manager.

This is two days after he says he had the flu? Lot of energy there for a sick man, haha.

Sounds to me like he was mad he got beat and needed someone/something to blame.

I completely agree with you. If he did not get disqualified in the first Montell Griffin fight and retired after the Ruiz fight he would of been 50-0.

Toney was almost as talented as Roy, but had better fundamentals. A bout at 175 would have been conclusive. Although, Roy blew Toney out in the one fight they did have. Maybe he was just better.

Hopkins still gave Roy a much tougher night than Toney did.

    Maybe?

If Jones dominating Toney isn't enough for you, look how they did against common opponents.

The excuses for this is a bit like SRL-Duran 2. Both Duran and Toney were used to lose a massive amount of weight before fights, had done so for years, but against the highest calibre opponent they've ever faced they suddenly can't be arsed to do it properly?

Or (just try it for a second)

    They made excuses.
