Sharkey would have beaten Jones more surely than Jeffries would.

My pick is Jeffries, but your original implication that it was foolish to even discuss the outcome of such a contest is taking a hell of a lot on trust imo.
Jones was 5 '11 in, hit hard, had blinding hand speed, and reflexes, and would come in between 190lbs/193lbs , [ near his Ruiz weight] .

In other words heavier than Choynsky,Fitz,Sharkey, Finnegan ,Munroe,Griffin,Kennedy . and only 7 lbs lighter than Ruhlin ,Jeffries biggest and heaviest opponent.

And, he would be in his prime, which neither Corbett ,or Fitz were.

It is not beyond the realms of possibilty that he might give Jeffries a very interesting evening. imo

    On a side note.
I hazard a guess that more than a few, might make Jones favourite to beat Corbett

I stand by my point that him being big in his 60's does not somehow make him bigger when he was in actual fighting shape, instead of a caring grandfather that puts on gloves for the fans.

Fitz may be more durable, but they're in the same league; if any, the difference isn't large. You list Johnson, but he laid Fitz out in two rounds. Due to him being 40 years old i don't really think it matters much, but it hardly shows that Bobby had a great chin. He had a good chin, just like Jones. Maybe a bit better, but comparable.

Again, i don't see that much evidence for Jeffries being such a big one-punch knockout artist. He always needed a truckload of rounds to get the KO. My view is that he was heavy handed, but not much of a technical boxer (partly due to his wrestling background) and needed time to impose his superior strength on his opponent.

When Fitzsimmons fought Gus Ruhlin he just stood with his hands by his side and let Ruhlin take clean swings at his chin to taunt him.

He might have calculated that Ruhlin was in a bad way and probably couldn't hurt him much but even so, could you imagine Jones doing that against a 200lb heavyweight who could bang?

i think its safe to say that if jones saw the punches coming and naturally rolled with them he could take a good punch himself. this isnt me arguing that jones has the greatest chin ever but i dont think your scenario helps fitz case a whole lot

Are you aware that Jeffries didn't always try to end his fights early. Jeffries did not swing for the fences, like say Marciano did who took on average a little over 9 rounds in his title matches vs the same sized guys.

Jeffries had more speed than most punchers in his class, and some historians consider him a great hitter. We can argue that.

The point to focus on here is Jeffries hit several times harder than Tarver who Ko'd Roy Jones with one punch, or Johnson who had Jones on the floor for at least a minutes.

To pick Jones over any quality heavy who can hit, can take a punch, and had the stamina and will to win is foolish.

I don't know, I have seen many fighters taunt their oponents by putting out their chin, but how many will actualy let an oponent land on it?

Also remember that Ruhlin was a 200 pound guy who could hit.

I don't think Jones would care to put forth a similar display of bravado.

Roy Jones is about 5'9 1/2" tall, and very light boned. This has been confirmed by people who meet him live. 5'11" for Jones is a bit of a stretch.

While Jones was fast and skilled, he was a pound for pound business man, and carefully selected opponents who could not press him and could not hit hard to test his suspect chin.

Anyone who thinks Jones would make it at heavyweight is fooling themselves. Jones backed out of makable fights with Corrie Sanders and Vitali Klitschko. Lennox Lewis would have crushed Jones. Jones beat Ruiz, but so did James Toney.

Jones is listed as 5'11in, until there is irrefutable evidence to the contrary I will accept that.

Even if Jones was 5 ' 91/2in ,that would make him an inch and a half taller than Sharkey who,
twice went the route with Jeffries for a total of 45rds.

We are not discussing Jones chances against heavyweights of this era ,but solely how he would fare against Jeffries.
Ive made my pick ,but to infer it would be a walk over is optimistic imo.

Jeffires choose to not end fists quickly for what reason? Since he was generally so much bigger than his opposition. He must've been quite conservative if some of these guys lasted 20+ rounds with him while having a 30-50 pound weight disadvantage.

Jeffries might punch good, but Roy will see it coming. Roy should make him look foolish, and maybe he lands and hurts him but can Jim finish him? The Tarver shot was about the placement, speed, and not seeing it... not just the power.

If it's foolish. Then tell that to ESB. Jones wins the poll.

its modern rules though and i think a lot of people arent taking that into consideration. jeffries wouldnt be able to fight like jeffries did.

I guess that's the conclusion, under modern rules Jones would stand a very good chance.

I chose Jefferies and I'm sticking with that, but I don't think my any means it would be a walk in the park.
