Honestly I am not sure Pavlik would win but these people posting "nobody beats a Prime Roy" "Roy is unbeatable" "Pavlik wouldn't be able to get to Roy" etc. are morons. If I thought 100% Pavlik would win I would just come out and say it. To me it is a toss up. Jones could slice Pavlik up and get a cut stoppage, he could Jab and run all night and get a UD. And on the same token Pavlik could knock Roy stiff. See what I am saying here? This is not me hating on Jones. I think it would be a very interesting fight.
back in pavlik's prime, i'd say he might have a shot. but after he's more recent performances (admittedly, battling alcholism) he seems to have a serious problem with movers and the unexpected. if martinez could confuse him with angles and speed, jones would tear him apart. the power of pavlik to i just can't see being a factor. jones didn't seem to be terribly vulnerable at middleweight to heavy handed pressure fighters. pavlik's got beef but he's an accumulation puncher. julian jackson? I could see him sparking jones but pavlik would need a lot of time to grind him down (as he did against taylor) and roy is way less hittable than taylor
i cant believe this is a serious thread roy destroys pavlik in prime i would take a thread that started paul malignaggi vs marvin hagler at 160 more serious
Pavlik is a big Middleweight and that is what causes me concern. Like I said Roy could win on cut stoppage or UD. Pavlik's only shot is a KO he is not going to outbox Roy. Ever. To me it is probably 60/40 Roy winning. If they fought 10 times Jones would win more than Pavlik for sure but Pavlik could beat Jones who never really fought a legit pressure power puncher in his whole career.
this is true. the closest he came was glen johnson (who has FAR less power but took out a past it jones). i'd put odds a lot closer on roy but you're right that we don't really have a frame of reference for how jones handles a pavlik...but we do know how a pavlik handles a roy. and it ain't too well
There are few if any linear middleweight champions that Jones would beat with more ease. Even the Pavlik that ate up Edison Miranda's shots is not going to see round 4 unless Roy felt like playing.
Yes really...it amazes me, all these picks for Pavlik destroying Jones..the same Jones that so many have (wrongly) picked over Monzon in times past.
Jeez!, Jones would clown Pavlik, and I like Pavlik. Roy would offset his jab with movement, and the with the way Pavlik jabs, Jones would slip inside his jab and hit with some real solid counters. These two fighters are worlds apart, you saw in that small sequence in the Hopkins fight how Hopkins just stood out of range, not at long range, but on periphery of mid range, inviting Pavlik to jab, when he did he slipped inside his lead, stepped into mid range and hit with a 4 punch combo or something. One of the hardest skills to learn, is how to be effective from mid range without getting hit, when you can do that, its a meassure of just how talented the fighter is, cause it speaks of his understanding of angles, which Jones, Hopkins, Whitaker had, which is what Mayweather displays right now. Pavlil's attacks are too predictable for a fighter like Jones, his attacks are in straight lines.
What am I missing here ? To borrow from Rory in LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS: (0:27) "Is this some foreign ****'s joke that Irish ****s don't get ?" [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKX32WqDNDU&feature=related[/ame] I notice a lot of serious posters are equivocating on this question. Are you outta your ****in' minds ??? Prime Roy could pick any round to stop any version of Pavlik. If Roy toyed with Kelly, the hapless Youngstown boy would be lucky to land in double digits over 12 rounds. I still feel I'm missing something here. What's the punchline, somebody ?
