Ray Leonard wasn't really a household name as such, he was well known and loved among sports fans though.
Was part of the Sky deal not to culminate in a fight with Toney? That was the plan and talk. But Toney lost (then so did Eubank, shockingly to Collins in 95)...
As for Jones making $3M against Paz, that's the equivalent of like $15M today. I don't see it. They didn't get the return.
'My objective is to send him back to his day job.' - Eubank on Tony 'Punching Postman' Thornton BRUTAL This content is protected Always remember post-fight on the apron after this fight referring to himself as the "master of brinkmanship" when told it was close - haha F*ck Nunn, Calzaghe, Jones, Starling, Liles, Hearns, Hagler, Thornton etc this guy Mr Livingstone Eubank was a million times more interesting Only Mike Tyson was as complex and interesting a man
Thornton was a replacement for initial mandatory Tim Littles, who pulled out injured right before the fight was to be officially announced at press conference. Credit to Eubank for agreeing to fight the mandatory (Littles) when he could've given up the title and gone to Italy to take the WBC crown in a much easier fight for a more 'prestigious' title. Littles was an unbeaten hot prospect rated alongside McClellan and Jones and Lamar Parks.
More nonsense. The Sky deal could in no way financed a 10m+ fight The Sky deal was there to make British people who wanted to watch boxing subscribe to Sky and to give Eubank £1m per fight plus a lesser amount for another opponent.
Those were the reports at the time. It was a popular fight. Like Charles Burley said, he made around that for the Toney fight too, as both guys took a percentage deal, after turning down guaranteed purses of $2m plus. Around the same time as the Paz fight, he also signed a new HBO deal for a lot of money. He certainly wasn’t fighting for peanuts.
Why would anyone need to finance a 10m+ fight for them!? That's fantasy money back then! You're constantly off your rocker with your figures and numbers.
That's strange because it was constantly spoke of that the last fight would be v James Toney. Why wouldn't it be (unless one of them actually lost)? The money would've been already made for Eubank. He called him out even after the Jones loss after his Barratubena fight, looking into the camera saying - 'You disrespected my mother! We can't be having that! Come back down.' as well as saying Collins, Benn and Jones are getting knocked out. He also chased Toney and Jones on his 96 comeback. Nothing to lose. But again Loudon on boxingforum24 seems to know something nobody else does.
5m for each, is what each would expect to make it worthwhile. It's what Toney earned against Jones Jr
