nah b, toney was landing cleanly, at a certain point in the mid rounds you knew toney would get to him. nunn started stayin in there too long. against roy, staying in there with his type of fluid offense would cause problems
Not a lot , not seriously and never buzzed and not a legitimate KD . the only man to legitimately floord toney is reggie johnson (maybe sam peter too)
I couldn't stand Michael Nunn prior to his loss to Toney. He had some good wins (KO9 Frank Tate (won the IBF MW title), KO8 Juan Roldon, and KO1 Sumbu Kalambay) but struggled with Iran Barkley WMD12 and former WW champ Marlon Starling. Starling never fought past 147Lbs before or after, he was past prime and still almost beat Nunn. Nunn stopped the past prime former WW and JMW champ Donald Curry in 10. There was just something about him that I didn't like back then and I felt that many were overrating him. Next up was Toney. Nunn outboxed Toney for most of the first 10 rounds. Toney stopped him in the 11th. I'm surprised they never fought again. I thought for sure that Nunn would have regained his title from Toney. Toney moved up to SMW and won the WBA title by beating Victor Cordoba WSD12. He beat Cordoba in the rematch by UD. He beat Merqui Sosa W12 and later lost to Steve Little and Frankie Liles. Nunn was looking like an underachiever at this point. It was after this that I started liking Nunn for some reason. Nunn looked good in his wins over John Scully W12, Rudy Nix KO2, Booker Word KO7, and Lonnie Horn KO1 among others... not the best of the best but Nunn was looking sharp and going for the KO more often. I thought Nunn beat Graciano Rocchigiani in Germany for the vacant WBC LHW title but Rocky got the SD win. Nunn looked good in his win over William Guthrie, KO7. Had Nunn got the win over Rocchigiani in 1998 and went on to fight Roy Jone Jr... I honestly think he would have had a good chance of beating him.
People really do exaggerate Nunn's performance over Toney.Nunn was leading on the scorecards and it was more a case of him simply throwing in greater volume rather than truly outboxing Toney.Nunn's flurries gave him an edge in the fight, but Toney always looked the more relaxed and skilled fighter in there. Michael "2nd rate bum" Nunn continues to be one of the most grossly overestimated fighters on the boxing forums. You're criticizing Jones for not being technically sound while praising Nunn for possessing "outstanding fundamentals"? Nunn was nothing of the sort.He was as reliant on his athletic ability as Jones was.Difference being,Jones was able to sustain his gifts over a longer period than just one fight like Nunn.
Any top heavyweight besides John Ruiz always had that special extra plus going for them vs Jones. Their heavyweight punch would have been a major disaster for Jones if it connected. I think Dokes at his best would have been able to overcome a points deficit early on to ko Jones as soon as he landed something. I think Doke's conquerer, Gerrie Coetzee would have also stopped Roy....as well as Mike Weaver, among others.
Nunn was a better fundamental boxer than Roy, and he did rely on his athletic ability, like all fighters to do whatever degree they can, but Roy's was so rare he almost relied on it solely. Nunn wasn't nearly as athletically gifted as Roy, and had to be a better boxer to reach the level he reached. His lead over Toney was not the result of meaningless flurries, and his career did not boil down to one fight. I think your view of Nunn is the one that's exaggerated.
I don't know i'd say Nunn wasn't as athletically gifted as Jones. He was immensely athletic and had just about the perfect build for a dominant imposing middleweight. he was just a lot sloppier, lazier and less smart with what he had than Jones was, but the raw overall blend of hand, foot and reflexive speed was in the same ballpark.
Bump I still think this could be a highly competitive fight between 2 talented fighters. The Nunn who stopped Tate could have really given RJJ some problems at MW.
And Nunn 1 punched tough guy Curtis Parker. 1 punched Kalambay. And another tough guy back in his pre title bouts on espn in Darnell Knox. Then he took Frank Tate apart at a time when both were considered similar ability and talent. Everyone seems to look at the guys worst efforts to draw conclusions. but he had some a#1 performances no other middle had been doing in a long long time.
Uhh, what? Do not post please if you're going to get personal. It won't be tolerated. A good boxing champion and physical phenomenon. He was no superstar, nobody knew him - preferred the quiet country life in his hometown.
