In a 12 round fight: Marciano vs RJJ How would Roy handle the Rock? Rocky was a good but limited fighter, Roy had the talents and skill. How would Roy fare? I personally think the only possible outcomes are Roy by UD or Marciano by stoppage. I'm mildly in favour of Roy getting the decision.
i lot of people will say that rocky is a stylistic nightmare for roy. while i think rocky wins, this is not jones' worst possible matchup. marciano didn't have the foot speed to catch and trap jones at will. what he would do is slowly grind jones down round after round, catching him only for bursts in the first half of the fight, before fully imposing his will in the second half. i honestly feel it depends on the length of the fight: jones has a shot of a close decision over 12, gets brutalizes by the rock over 15
Hard to come to a conclusion with only 1 fight of Roy at heavyweight But Marciano was a heavyweight at 188 ... how many fights at around that weight has Roy had?
C'mon this is so unfair! I know there are a lot of old school nut huggers on here that will pick Marciano based upon either nostalgia or pure whiteness. But in reality Rocky is nothing more than a cruiser weight (maybe even LHW w/ day before weigh ins)...while RJJ is a legitimate HEAVYWEIGHT who utterly dominated a larger and more skilled Heavyweight in Ruiz. I am not confident that Rocky sees the finish line in the fight...RJJ by destruction!
If it was legal (no steroids), then I give a ton of kudos for Jones' win over Ruiz. I have little doubt that Ruiz fought such a poor fight because he realized if he had 'gone for' Jones, it was a lot more likely he would of been stopped, rather than he would of got to Roy, thus he took his punishment and dropped the decision, rather than suffered the embarrassment of being stopped by a 'glorified middleweight'. That said, Ruiz was no Marciano, Rocky had an intensity Johnny could not even dream of, and Marciano's chin was up there with the greats. I have little doubt while the fight was going, Jones would use his speed to take a lead, but sooner rather than later, the Brockton Blockbuster would get to Jones. Marciano KO around the fourth.
With a modern diet and not a belly stuffed with red meat, Marciano would be lighter than 187 lbs sure. But I'm not too sure if he could fight at lhw without dehydrating, but we have Chavez Jr now so everything is possible(With people claiming he is a cruiser, and some even claiming he is a shw. Also technically at the fight, Roy was only 198/199 lbs so he was a cruiser and not true heavyweight. (Meant as a joke, I'm not going to cherry pick 1/2 lbs)
I don't think Marciano has any chance to KO Roy in four. Roy is fast enough to run and has a 7 inch reach advantage. He could possible just jab his way to victory.
Roy came into the ring at around 185 or so for his LHW fights if I remember right. Marciano wins by destruction. Sooner than later in the fight. Roy doesn't clinch, he skates away, but part of why Walcott was so successful against Rocky is he'd clinch and smother Rocky when he got too close. They'd have to reset, which temporarily gave JJW the advantage. There isn't much difference in size; they're a match in that respect. The gulf lies in the athleticism and speed of Roy and the grit of Marciano. Having said all that, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones win this. He would definitely hit Marciano. I think he could hurt him too.
even if you think rocky wins by KO (which is fair) the idea that he just runs roughshed over him and destroys him early, ignores jones own speed and skill and attributes to rocky a fighting style he traditionally didn't show
But from the first bell to the last, Marciano would only be one right hand from winning the fight. As mentioned I can see Jones leading (but not with the jab, Jones was not a 'jabber'), but Rocky would get to Jones in my opinion.
he wasn't usually a jabber but he did use it against ruiz in his only heavyweight outing, much more than normal. against an opponent like vinny paz (not elite i know) who fought low and tried to bull his way in, jones carved his face in brutual fashion with the jab
Oh my, what is this thread coming to, when half of the posters pick a souped up HW Roy Jones to defeat a rock hard destroyer like Marciano ? Look who Marciano kod ? An Ezzard Charles, an Archie Moore,a Jersey Joe Walcott, who were they contemporaries, a Roy Jones excellent at 165-8 lbs ,wouldn't have dreamnt of fighting...I love Roy Jones's amazing reflexis and today is a great boxing analyst but tackling a powerful banger like Marciano is going a bridge too far...
Roy doesn't lose a second of any round. Easy work. Afterwards, Marciano would become a part time pizza delivery man to discredit the win.
