jones could beat marciano. denying it doesnt make sense to me. it just doesnt mean he WOULD beat rocky. on paper, its a great fight to me but in reality may be far different. anyone saying with pure confidence that either would win is foolish...neither fighter fougt anyone comparable to the other

It showed that a good, consistent jab could break his rhytm. A prime Mike might have caused Jones some real trouble.

However, I see no bearing of that fight on a match-up with Rocky. Him and McCallum don't have many similarities, to put it lightly.

Those light heavyweights you're talking about were about as big as the average Marciano opponent, you realize that?

I thought Jones took it easy on McCallum.

i thought jones couldnt put a dent in mccallum who was 40 and looked it in that division. i saw that mccallum backed him into the ropes all night, and another guy would do the same thing to him a couple years later his name was antonio tarver. those two fights had a very similar pattern which suggests it was something innate to jones, this problem about being backed into ropes, not being able to do much when he got there, and not being able to prevent guys from doing it over and over. griffin showed some of that about jones in their first fight. i'd say its pretty relevant information if you want to know who wins a jones and marciano fight.

i thought jones couldnt put much of a dent in these light heavyweights in general and his record says it i dont have to say it. a whole lot of weak wins there at 175 like the mccallum, telesco, lou del valle fights, a whole lot of highly questionable looking ko's from the few ko's that he did have there like the richard frazier, otis grant, clinton woods, glen kelly fights. a whole lot of underwhelming opponents of course and the biggest wins against virgil hill and montell griffin, not very comparable to what he might do to marciano

if you think jones beats marciano youre entitled to think it but i dont see what sort of logic can substantiate it

Don't think there's such a thing in a title fight.

Jones tended to skip straight back from jabs, so a good jab could put him on the ropes. Hopkins had some sucess doing it to. But Marciano was hardly know for a great, rangy jab. He was a completely different fighter than these guys.

Jones showed Mike way too much respect because, let's face it, McCallum was a faded HoFer who deserved better than to be ran out of the ring. McCallum did well against a Roy who didn't intend to hurt him.

Roy Jones struggled against Southpaw jabs. Not jabs in general. Mostly because the jab is directly under his left hook and he circled in to get his left hook off. Check the Eric Harding fight for what a left hander's jab can do to frustrate Roy. Roy of course was one of the best body punchers in boxing and his right hand had as much dynamite as his left, but taking away his left hook is paramount to beating him.

In his prime Jones often went over to the ropes himself - he certainly wasn't afraid of being on the ropes. McCallum didn't back Jones into the ropes, Jones was comfortable enough being there because he wasn't too worried about McCallum up close. As far as the Tarver fight, that's just absurd. Jones looked exhausted by the 5th round - completely uncharacteristic. He went over to the ropes himself to rest and Tarver followed him. Tarver isn't even a pressure fighter, he's a counterpuncher. Anyway, I don't think Jones would be playing around on the ropes against a dangerous puncher like Marciano.

:nutcaseBut Jones on the ropes is the worst possible thing JR could do against The Rock..He's libel to literally get murdered right there in the ring..
