Nothing here convinces me that Jones stands a chance against Marciano. In fact, he looks quite ordinary. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdUCAc58rr0&feature=related[/ame]
I agree..Everytime he fought a well known skilled fighter he was exposed one way or another. that why he spent his career fighting nobody's.:boxing2:hippy
Rocky against a naturally much smaller man not known for taking a punch well at the bigger weights taking on one of the most devastating punchers at the weight with endless stamina, a great chin, insane willpower and the uncanny ability to answer the call exactly when he needed too. Lastarza was a very skilled fighter (not at much as Jones I agree, however Jones at the higher weights isn't as impressive as some are making out) but he was bigger, more defensivley minded and had a much better chin and he lasted 11 rounds, from rounds 6 onwards he was looking to do nothing more than survive and counter when it was safe to do so. This would be the same with RJJ IMO. He's not gonna be like a Holmes or Ali, throwing out long hard jabs and staying on his bike, if he did i'd favour Roy but he doesn't fight like this so i'm picking Rocky. Also isn't it safe to assume Rocky would start putting on the pressure earlier if he knew it was a 10 round fight? The fact that he wouldn't have to fight an extra 15 minutes, might mean he might go all out within the first 3 rounds.
Why is this even a topic of conversation. Roids Jones would get killed in that ring. Jones would win a few rounds but sooner or later he would get pinned by the ropes and pulverized.
We're talking about two men who will weigh in the region of 185. If Rocky goes all out recklessly he'll get knocked out. No doubt. He has to apply intelligent pressure and to do that he's gonna be giving away rounds early doors as roy potshots from range. By about round 9 Rocky will be on top but I think a prime Jones can survive for 3 minutes where as I don't think he could survive for 9. At this weight we're talking the most skilled in filmed history against the most relentless and hardest punching in filmed history. The shorter the rounds limit the more chance I give Rocky of losing.
I agree with most of what you said but I VERY SERIOUSLY doubt that Jones could, and particularly, would KO Marciano. Marciano took shots from naturally bigger fighters who hit harder than Jones and was never in trouble of being stopped. In all the fights avaliable of Rocky I've never seen him in any serious trouble that even hinted that he was close to being KO'd. Moore is naturally bigger and IMO hits harder than Roy and not just by a little bit, also very skilled and very crafy. The shot he hit Rocky with coming in, he described as one of the hardest shots he ever threw and all it did was KD Marciano for 2 seconds with no lingering effects. RJJ has never KO'd anyone over 180 lbs let alone, one with such a great chin as Marciano's. I doubt it would happen. Also when I talk about weight I'm refering to their natural weights, Marciano had to train himself extremely hard to get below 200 and did all natural training like push ups, sit ups, heavy bag, run, spar etc. RJJ on the other hand had to train himself up with weights and roids in order to reach the higher weights.
MM, all true you post... This nonsense that RJ would at 185 be at the same weight strength as Marciano is ludicrous....Marciano as you say was "trimmed" down to 185 at the weighin by assiduous training and was by leagues a much more powerful man than Roy Jones...Every great fighter has an ideal boxing weight to maximize their reflexis and handspeed...And I have seen how great fighters say at 147 lbs,or 160, or 175 lbs, lose much of their effectiveness going up to another weight division... RJJ was at his best at 168 pounds where his main asset punching speed came to fore. I am sure if Roy Jones was the same age as Rocky fighting in the 1950s this fantasy bout would not even be discussed at all...Not only because of the foolishness of this "matchup, but Roy Jones jr who I ADMIRE, would because of the calibre of top Lightheavies fighting in the 1950s, be not as highly regarded as a great LH as he is now, though his chin was much exposed in the latter stages of his career...Cheers...
I don't think he would because I don't think Rocky would fight gung-ho with reckless abandon. I think he'd press and throw many shots and would win the fight late on after wearing Roy down. I just don't think this would be within ten rounds. Well both fighter's would be comfortable at 185 come fight night. Both weighed within that region come fight night for most of their career.
The problem with your plan, luf, is that Marciano is going to have to get wild and try to outwork Roy. Roy will be in full hit and run mode, and he simply won't catch him trying to cut him off. He's just too slick. Rock would have to fight an incredible dumb fight. Just come in mauling and swinging wildly. and catch Roy pulling out with his hands down, something Roy does quite a lot.
Well that's why I think he'd win over 12 or 15 but not over 10. If Rock comes out wild with no respect for Jones, he will get knocked out. A guy who can punch that quickly and accurately has to be respected, anything less is suicidal, even for the late, great Marciano.
