Although all the intangibles in this fight suggest you'd have to favour RJJ, SRL was an exceptionally smart guy who could find a way to win!!! When I first read the title I said Jones right away....but then I'd have def picked Hagler to win also. It's also worth noting that this RJJ had no big fight experience at all...whereas Ray had plenty. I'll still pick Jones...but I would not be surprised in the slightest were Ray to steal a win.
I can't possibly see how Ray would win. Roy has just about all the advantages. Size, strength, speed, etc. The Terry Norris affair would seem almost like a picnic.
Hopkins was still on the way up when Jones defeated him. Leonard was really a blown up welter. He wasn't a natural middle weight. I think the match might go down a bit like Leonard vs Hearns, where Hearns is out boxing Leonard, then Leonard is forced to make it a slugging match. Roy Jones could not take a good punch at light heavy, but I saw no signs of him being chinny at middle. I'll go with Jones via decision here. Leonard = better pound for pound fighter. Jones = better middle weight.
What's that version of Leonard got to do with anything tho. NOBODY, including Jones is making a decent version of Leonard (even at 160) look that bad.
It's not a question of Ray being bad. I just think Roy Jones, given his size, speed and skill, is that much better, h2h.
Everybody knows the answer to this! I'm going with the popular vote. Roy Jones, p4p best fighter on 7 seperate occasions, vs, Ray Leonard, 1981's p4p fighter. I see Roy all over him like swarming lice. leonard's pawing jab no match for Roy's thudding right lead landing with sickening regularity against the side of Leonard's head. the only poosible outcome is Roy by knockout. Mere victory on points is not enough for THIS superstar! This is Ali-Cleveland Williams all over again. Left-right-left-right-Left-right-left-right-Left-right-left-right-Left-right-left-right. Leonard falls in three. Like the man said, this would make the Norris fight seem like a picnic!
Ray was past it at MW so Jones. But P4P I go with Leonard without a doubt. Ray's skill set was higher and he was a better fighter.
