I’ve given this some more thought.

I appreciate that the world and the sport were very different back then.

Those warriors were sometimes fighting every few weeks. It defies belief. I remember when I was younger and I found out that Ray and Jake had a rematch just 3 weeks after one of their fights. It blew my mind. It’s just unbelievable.

So when we watch these guys, they obviously weren’t always at their best.

If guys like Ray and Basilio had only fought 3-4 times per year like Roy did, then obviously they’d have been much fresher. Likewise, if Roy had fought their schedule, he couldn’t have gone undefeated fighting every few weeks or so.

To be objective, we need to look at a specific hypothetical scenario.

In my honest opinion, if Roy had fought those guys within a 6 month period or something, or if he’d have fought them along with lots of other guys within a short period, he could well have picked up the odd loss. But if everybody fought each other fresh and to their full capabilities, then I’d pick him every time. So it depends on the circumstances.

Maybe Basilio could have beaten Roy had he caught Roy at a certain time. But prime for prime, fresh and injury free, he wouldn’t have had a chance.

    Good debate.
