Today on ESPN's First Take RJJ gave his opinions and analogy on who he thought would win between Pacquiao and Maywether, but it was only under pressure from Steven A. Smith, that Jones predicticted Mayweather would win. With all the endless debates (this being another), I've heard RJJ go back and forth on who he thinks would win. He also went on to say, he would not be seeking a fight with Vitaly, but did say he would seek a possible Cruiser weight title, much to the dismay of Steven A. Smith. Thoughts?
u left out one big part he admitted that taking the weight off took alot out of him. imo his biggest problem is confidence. dont get me wrong he shouldve hung them up. but the fight he got ko'd against the russian(cant remeber his name) i watched it and it wasnt the brutal beating i heard it was i actually had him up by a point when he got ko'd. And i think the roy that fought ruiz we have definatley been a problem for any klitcksko.now noway, just gotta say im not a diehard rjj fan. but at his bst he wouldve been a tough out for anybody h2h ever he was that good when he was good
@Dustball Yea he did mention that weight fluctuation did affect him. But Roy has nothing left to prove, and it never cease to amaze me how fighters just can't call it quits. I was a little surprised when Steven A. Smith told him he needs to retire, usually media journalist wouldn't be so bold, but Smith has always been outspoken. Roy handled it with the calmness he's always exhibited as a champion.
i don't disagree with anything u said. what people don't realize, and i'm not trying to act like i am somebody. as a former failed athelete what got them guys there is the same thing that can't let them quit. 10yrs ago i wouldve said roy, noway he will still be fighting. he has to many other things he can do. he ain't fightin for the money. he is fighting for somethin me and u and the average fan just don't get.
@Dustball Agreed. Actually I think that will be my next thread "Why Athletes Can't call it Quits"! This is actually a topic that transcends boxing and actually applies from athletes to the average working person. But it seems to be prevalent in boxing and the reasons vary.
Wow - I want to see Roys Reaction to this! Was he cool and calm or all like "**** you man - I retire when i want"
im a massive roy jones fan but i find it so sad to watch him now as its such a shadow of what he used to be,
Agreed I haven't seen him fight since Trinidad - But I want to see this Stephen A Smith say this to Roy's face - I agree Roy should retire but myself, as a non professional fighter I wouldn't say that to him - It is kind of his choice (unless he is banned for medical reasons) and if he needs the money he deserves to be able to compete - although not at a high level but I am sure there is money for him to make without putting his health in too much risk all i know is i wont be watching one of my childhood boxing heros be knocked around by some nobody!
Trust me Steven A Smith said that to Roy Jones and even though it was not face to face, it was live via satellite. They also went on to ask Jones if he thought Pacquiao has taken steroids. You may be able to find the video on YouTube. I was even a little uncomfortable for him!
I give Roy credit for picking the most vulnerable cruiser champ to target (Wlod). But RJJ doesn't have enough left to beat Wlod in Poland. It's not gonna work out.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8217766 Here it is This just shows how out of touch ESPN is .. I mean is anyone really clamoring for this fight any more ? They have no clue on the sport of boxing !
