Am I only one who thought Roy Jones Jr was exceptionally good at calling fights during Boxing After Dark in the mid-late 90s? I would really like to see him make a return to HBO, quit fighting because he has nothing left to prove, and put Lampley to shame. I think Jones was better than Leonard and is certainly better than Lennox.
Nate Campbell would be my choice to take over from Kellerman/Merchant once he retires. And to take over by beating Kellerman badly in the ring. Dropping his hands like he did against Peden, allowing Kellerman to give him his best shot. Of course to no effect. And then beating on Kellerman some more.
Just keep feeding Lennox Lewis drinks (or whatever he was on last night) and you'll get great comedy all night. As per RJJ, I think he felt that commentating was distracting from his ring activities. On top of that he wanted more than HBO wanted.
I always thought the same. He makes very astute comments. He's very analytical when it comes to the sweet science. He'd also make a top notch trainer IMO.
Roy never seemed to go on a tangent when he was calling fights. He would make a good point, and then shut up. He was entertaining also, willing to have a laugh and a giggle - something perhaps Lennox and Leonard were not as willing to do. I think Roy should make a comeback. He was brilliant.
Agreed, its like watching a b-level actor who is on pain killers. His is so monotonous and just gives a very b-level type of feel to an HBO production that is usually good.
Roy was by far the best in years. He also did HBO boxing including the Trinidad/Wright PPV. Papa does suck too. Sadly I see them keeping Max for a while just because he is young and was on FNFs for a while. All 3 need to go. Papa is soulless.
