I guess '69 isn't your birth year, then? :dunno Because to anyone born in the last millennium, RJJ was absolutely a household name at one point. You can have known absolutely nothing about boxing and never watched it, but unless you were a complete hermit in the mid to late 90's you were about as likely to have not heard RJJ's name as Michael Jordan's or Jose Canseco's.

Aside from Tyson and maybe DLH and Holyfield, nobody in the sport had more mainstream collective consciousness saturation in the last decade-and-change of the century.

There are valid critical responses to Roy here, but that isn't one.

The first two fair enough but come on - Lebedev, really? I'm the biggest White Swan fan you'll find but that fight hardly counts for his legacy nor against the by then shot to hell Roy's.

40 year old another Jones f*cked up Lebedev's face. What is your point? Excuses..

    :dunno

    What an astoundingly stupid comment.

Guillermo Jones at 41 could still go; Roy Jones at 42 was shot to hell. That is patently obvious to anybody with eyeballs. Excuses have nothing to do with it - I'm a huge fan of Lebedev's and don't really care much about RJJ. Fact is, however, that knocking out a tattered version of him at cruiser in 2011 meant very, very little and aside from adding a big name to his résumé it wasn't some highly creditable achievement or boost to Lebedev's rep.

No, I shouldn't, if that is blatantly applicable in the context of the fight we're discussing.

You know what, guys? @Moonlight is right, we should stop using "shot' as an excuse, ever. Larry Holmes, Trevor Berbick and Leon Spinks all beat Muhammad Ali fair & square and are just plain better than him, period. :deal:

You're crying too much for these words. We can get along better if you admit that RJJ is your sugar daddy.

I literally DGAF about him. You're making wild assumptions there, why, I have no idea.

Maybe you desperately want to be able to give Lebedev as much credit as possible for the victory and so you're overinflating the worth of it? Lebedev's awesome, but...you don't have to get dishonestly greedy on his behalf.

Either that or you really, truly hate Roy to an irrational degree. Imagine hating someone that much that you accuse somebody who's completely neutral toward them of being a nuthugger. :shakehead:

Let’s not forget when Tyson, DLH, and Holyfield were selling close to a million or over PPV’s Roy was selling 90,000. You can’t compare Roy to those fighters based on marketability or resume. Those fighters were willing to fight anyone. Roy wasn’t.

I wasn't comparing them on that rubric whatsoever. I was talking about being household names among mainstream civilians who don't care/know about or watch boxing. The four of them were.

Roy wasn’t a household name on the same level as those guys until very late in the game. His opposition was very average for much of his HBO contract and he was fighting in obscure places and little arenas selling around 90k to 100k PPV’s while DLH, Tyson, and Holyfield were fighting in Vegas, NY, and Atlantic City doing big numbers. For much of Roy’s career he really wasn’t known outside of hardcore boxing circles. That only changed towards the later stages of his career.
