He gets credit for beating a much bigger man who was genuinely a top 5 contender in that division. For being a HW champion he gets no credit from me.
But Wilder and Josh are 100% OK by you to get a shots at da HW title cuz day records is far superior to Ruiz's? Josh beat an old Vitali, and you see nothing wrong with that either. Neither do you see anything wrong with Josh or Wilder beating an old Ortiz. Gee! I wonder why all these glaring inconsistencies! In any case, the record stands 1. Beat Holyfield TWICE floored him once and Holy cheated to stay on his feet. 2. Beat Johnson and floored him twice. 3. Beat Rahman and almost knocked him out. 4. Beat Gallota despite ref opposition 5. Beat Oquendo by TKO 6. Beat Valuev twice but got cheated in Germany. Bitter pill to swallow for some sensitive souls I guess. But it is what it is. So why fume?
Strange that you are so finicky. Are you as finicky with Vlad? I mean, you know, Vitali fought smaller extremely mediocre boxers who knocked him out cold three times-one was a golfer. Ruiz got KOD by a monster puncher and stopped by a boxer in his prime in Hayes when he himself was old. Vitali got savaged when he was young. Once he fought men his own size he folded twice. You consider his record prior to gaining the championship impressive. Me thinks you suffers from selective vision amigo. This content is protected This content is protected LOL! Well Vitali also beat top 5 opposition so gets credit for that. He was also never a legitimate HW champion so he gets no credit for that. That being said I didn't know Vitali was ever knocked out by a part time golfer, if that's the case I'll have to revaluate him.
What I meant to say was that Vitali fought Corrie Sanders, who had been mainly playing golf and who had only three months to train, was a smaller older man. Yet Vladdidn't last two rounds. He got knocked down more than five times before the ref stepped in and stopped it. Then he got knocked out by Brewster, another mediocre fighter. That's why he chose to adopt the extremely evasive style since he knew he had a glass jaw. It worked OK until he came up against opponents with his height and reach. Then he folded just as Jackson did when he finally faced a similarly sized opponent whom he couldn't keep at a distance as easily.
Roy Jones, Jr. should get little or no credit for winning a version of the world heavyweight title from John Ruiz, who was not that good of a fighter even at his best and while using his usual fighting style.. In addition, Ruiz was not allowed to use his usual fighting style in a bout with Jones, making the latter's task much easier. The only reason why Ruiz was able to win a version of a world heavyweight title and beat some good fighters is that he was allowed to employ a fighting style which featured throwing one jab and immediately falling into a clinch over and over again during entire bouts. Allowing fighters to employ such a fighting style in boxing rings is not fair to their opponents or the fans. Even when allowed to use such a fighting style, Ruiz barely eked out decisions or simply lost when facing top fighters. - Chuck Johnston
I am very confident both Wlad and Vitali would have beaten Ruiz fairly easily. Vitali's got the height, reach, strength and power to keep Ruiz off of him. He'd win a late rounds TKO or UD. Either version of Wlad would beat Ruiz. The old version that didn't use his height well would win an ugly decision. Ruiz doesn't have the power to dent Wlad's less than stellar chin. Improved Wlad would box around Ruiz and win and easy UD or late rounds stoppage. Lennox Lewis around 01-03 rould crush Ruiz around the 4th round. Chris Byrd/ Ruiz would be a good, competitive fight. I can see it going either way. Like others have said, Ruiz was basically a top 5 contender, which isn't bad but he was never a legitimate "champion" or anywhere near the best HW at any time.
Exactly! When you actually watch his fights instead of looking at Boxrec or Wikipedia, Ruiz's signature wins for the most part don't stand up to scrutiny and become very questionable.
This content is protected This is the only one I can watch without falling asleep....short, sweet and to the point. Ruiz looks like he's at his viewing at the morgue. LOL. Too bad Tua didn't stay in this kind of shape - 225 lbs. Still he is underrated - kod Maskaev, Ruiz, Moorer and Rahmann. Lasted the full 12 rounds with Lewis and barely edged by Ike. Decisoned by Byrd. In prime shape he probably beats Byrd and gives Lewis more trouble.
