Well Jones isn't fighting a nobody next now is he? Though both are far past it. And no, nothing Jones does now will affect anything later on. Just like all the other greats, we forgive them their past their prime transgressions, all it takes is time. Jones is not the greatest of all time. But he is one of the best there ever was, and while his resume does not measure up to his immense talent, it is still very good. People need to look at the names on the resume, not just go talking about the ones who were not on there. (And don't cherry pick 3-5 names you know weren't good to try and represent the whole of his resume, since that is the oldest tactic in these debates....for every one you pick, there are 2 top rated fighters I can pick)
yep, watching the clip in slow-mo i can see tarver keeps his eyes on jones as he follows through with the hook despite catching a jab to his face. looks like a pretty deliberate punch to me.
RJJ is not a coulda/shoulda/woulda guy like Vitaly or Ike Ibeabuchi he is the only man in history to become MW, LHW, and HW champ, he won titles in 4 different weight classes and is a 3 time LHW champ WTF else does he have to do.
nothing, just hang it up. ideally he would have retired after ruiz or tarver1, but it's too late for that now. hopefully, he calls it quits after he beats tito, but i've got a feeling he'll hang around for a while and eventually become a lhw,cw stepping stone....how unfortunate.
He meant to throw that punch, he seen an opening and landed. It reminds me of the time when Mccall caught Lewis right on the button and knocked him out with his eyes closed, the truth is if you listen to his corner before the round you will hear them tell him to throw counter.
I really think that him having to lose 25 lbs of muscle at 35 or so completely messed up his body permanently. I mean it's one thing to lose some extra fat but he lost all muscle. And i think that was his undoing. He let Tarver get to him. He should've just stayed at HW and take on some guys he can beat and retire. If he had beaten Tyson, wow, he would've been right up there with the ATGs.
At his best, Roy was more exiting to watch than any fighter ever. His athleticism allowed him to land "bar fight" punches that no one could duplicate.
Roy fought a good level of competition, not a great one. I haven't said otherwise. Yeah, plus Benn, Eubank (never heard your story about Eubank turning down Jones cash - I always thought that Eubank was up for that fight although he thought he couldnt win - if what you say is true, fair enough) & rematches for Hopkins and Toney would have been very good for his legacy (Assuming he won of course). I think you've misunderstood me though. I wasn't attacking Roy's level of competition at all. People continually insist that "Roy didn't need the basics" (which he actually had in fact - it's just an easy way of saying he was technically poor) in response to criticism of his technical limitations. This is why they find it easy to pick him over greats like Charles, Monzon, Hagler, whoever. What I am saying is he'd have greater need of these basics against true top 1% fighters than he would against Rick Frazier.
