No it was not to you at all. Two factors come into play when it comes to talking about taking a punch: age and the wear and tear during your career. 1. As we age are ability to take punishment diminishes its really that simple. And its probably the number one reason why aging fighters coming back get hurt or don't succeed. You don't take a punch the same when your in your mid thirties that you would when you were say twenty. Its really that simple. As you age your body loses the ability to absorb and recover from punches. 2. The wear and tear. Every punch you take even if its a jab damages you. Every punch. Even in sparring. Its like a car per say in that sooner or latter no matter how much you change the oil or maintain the car it will not last forever. Pipino Cuevas had a cement chin as everyone will tell you. Beat him with a bat he still comes forward. After he lost to Hearns he was done he couldn't take a good punch and seemed to lose the ability to take alot of punches and keep attacking. Why was that? Because of all the punishment he had taken throughout a career that started when he was 15 years old. The Hearns fight was just two right hands which his body should have recovered from months latter and he could have continued his career as he was still only in his twenties? No his body had enough. He fought Stafford who was feather fisted got rocked and even dropped because his body was saying that's enough. Anyone who has ever gotten into a boxing ring at say 35 years old will tell you they are not the same fighter they were when they were 25. The first time I got dropped in a ring was when I was 44 years old. I had sparred 1000 of rounds and never had gotten dropped ever. So I got this silly notion in my head I could still spar so I sparred with this two fight amateur. In the 2nd round he dropped me with a right hand. Funny thing is I wasn't even hurt but my legs were gone and the punch while it was good I had taken much better shots previous and had no problem. But my body was not able to take it anymore. AGE had announced its arrival to me.
I totally respect your opinion ... I am also a huge Roy fan and have always rooted for him ... at his best he may have been as great as anyone ..
Sweet Pea was the greatest southpaw boxer I have ever seen. He did things i have never seen another fighter attempt to do. At his best he was almost magical and untouchable. He was so good in his prime that if you won a round aginst him it was a pretty big deal. Shakur reminds me a LITTLE of Pea. Roy might have been the perfect boxer i have ever seen with the mixture of perfect speed and power. Mayweather vs Jones I would pick Jones to stop him. Would have been a hell of a match though. I just cannot see Mayweather adjusting to the speed.
Floyd in addition to being vastly talented is one of the most intelligent boxers able to adapt to his opponents I've ever seen. Also he's a sneaky body puncher which alot of people overlook.
Well it’s obviously problematic to assess Jones’ prime beard since he wasn’t nailed solidly all that often. The shot by Lou Del Valle was reasonable but maybe Jones went down harder than appeared warranted - but then Del Valle was known to have a punch and had dropped Virgil Hill also. I understand Ruiz was a HW but he also rocked Jones badly with some pretty innocent looking punches very early in their fight. As to the effects of Jones coming back down in weight - what about the means by which he went up in weight in the first place to challenge Ruiz - is there not reasonable grounds to question if it was aided and abetted by PEDs - which might’ve bitten Roy on the a** when he came off them or even detracted from his game after a certain period of usage? Jones’ body began to appear much more ordinary over his ensuing fights - though of course I also understand that natural ageing would’ve lent itself to increasing atrophy. A lot of variables to take on board and ones that can’t be answered/fixed 100% without more information.
His rough housing is also severely overlooked he bosses Shane Mosley around the ring with it and Oscar De La Hoya on the inside. Crafty.
