Yesterday a friend of mine came over who is very involved in karate came over and he wanted to watch some boxing tapes. Now he has had absolutely nothing to do with boxing, he just wanted to see what it all was about. So i put on some tapes of some of the most popular fighters who have come and gone, Hearns, sugar ray leonard, Tyson, Hagler, Mayweather and he wasn't all that interested until i put on a tape of a prime Roy Jones. Watching him move around the ring, the first thing he said was "does that guy have a martial arts background?" I told him no, not that i was aware of, why did he ask "because" said my friend, "his footwork and foot position is basically a karate stance. The way he is up on the balls of his feet and continually pivoting from front to back off both feet reminds me of Bruce Lee" Now up until then i had never considered something like that, but i must admit that paying attention to it, it does seem like there is some merit to that observation. What do you all think? Sage
pretty ****ing stupid, considering Karate doesn't work in real life. Maybe next you guys could sit around 'analyzing' early UFC tapes.
Ignore the ***gotry displayed by the above posters. It is an interesting observation, since Jones is quite unique.
Funny he should mention Bruce Lee -- Sugar Ray Leonard has gone on record saying that he is a BIG fan of Lee, and that he would get fired up after watching his movies and even use him as an inspiration for some of his boxing training. Lee, in turn, was a BIG fan of Ali -- he loved the man so much that he would watch the Cleveland Williams fight and mimic Ali's footwork, reversing it for his southpaw stance. It seems easy to tell why Leonard would like Lee so much if he saw some of Ali's style in the man, and the same may go for Roy Jones Jr, although I've never seen anything indicating that Roy was a Lee fan. I wouldn't call Jones' stance a Karate stance, though. I think it's just the stance that felt most natural to him due to his gift of speed -- if you've ever tried shadowboxing, you may agree with me when I say that it feels more fluid and comfortable to throw punches from the waist rather than from a traditional boxing guard. The problem is that 99% of people can't get away with boxing like this in the ring, which is why they use traditional technique. Jones, on the other hand, had such amazing raw gifts that he was basically able to (mostly) box from a loose, hands-down, bouncing style that Lee, Ali and Leonard loved so much. A lot of Martial Arts styles favour this loose/fluid, bouncing footwork and 'weak guard' approach, especially in the realm of Kungfu and Taekwondo.
Yep. Bruce Lee coppied his footwork from Ali. I would say that Jones occasionally looked like he had a capioera type stance. Sort of dancey like.
Wtf. You must be drunk as ****. By know means is karate the best martial art. However, A blackbelt will spank a ufc guy any day of the week. I study Wushu and you know what i dont lose fights outside my Wushu training. Dumbass.
A master martial artist like Bruce Lee and Jackin Chan would have no problem beating any great boxer anyday of the week.
