I know Jones was far better against Thornton than Eubank was KO 2ND round! Eubank fought Collins and lost twice and he fought Benn, Jones was accused of dodging both these guys in the 90`s. Hill vs Watson would have been interesting but Virgil was too big but I`m comparing qualities in fighters, I feel Hill`s jab was much better than Watson`s etc. 39 year old McCallum vs Collins Benn vs Reggie Johnson James Toney in 94 vs Rochigiani Montell Griffin vs Michael Watson (at a catchweight)
Jones absolutely ducked both Collins and Benn, I've talked about this in length in several of the classic threads on Jones career. Interesting comparisons.
I felt Collins would have given Jones a closer fight than Benn, Jones said he would war with Collins and I feel if Collins used the jab like Griffin and McCallum he could have trapped Jones on the ropes and that`s how Calzaghe beat him, I do feel however Collins would probably need someone like Griffin`s trainer Futch to exploit Jones`s weakness`s they way Griffin did in their first fight. How do you feel Collins would have fared against Griffin at a catchweight?
IMO a peak Roy Jones was untouchable... Roy went down hill after the Ruiz fight whether it was the weight loss, ambition or steroids that caused this, but i think he would have hammered Collins at his peak.
He definitely was touchable, and his reluctance to fight Collins will go down as one of the worst ducks in recent times.
Benn would've beaten Jones - six rounds with Benn at his most aggressive is too many rounds for Jones to escape. Eubank had a TERRIFIC stiff jab. A Eubank-Toney fight would 100% depend on Toney's ability to read it and counter or he'd be grinded down. Thornton injured his shoulder against Jones and hardly any of that 30-punch flurry actually landed, Thornton couldn't throw back with his shoulder so the ref stopped it. He'd of given Jones a tough test over 12 and this was a post-retirement Thornton remember. Jones also struggled with Malinga's defense, unable to open it up or penetrate it til the 6th with a leaping left uppercut kind of thing that dropped him after resorting to feints. Eubank landed at will on Malinga from the off, as he did with Thornton. What Jones had was devastating one-punch power, look what he did to Thomas Tate who Julian Jackson couldn't dent. Virgil Hill was much naturally bigger and that body shot KO sounded like a gun going off. Eubank was a lot slicker than Jones as a boxer. I see Jones struggling with Rocchigiani's defense just as he did Malinga and Thornton's, and Rocchigiani was so much naturally bigger that a leaping head shot probably wouldn't send him flying. Toney though would roll with Rocchigiani's right jabs and counter, go downstairs and through the middle with uppercuts and have a field day. Rocchi was better than Jirov though. Virgil Hill was a light-heavy and Watson a middleweight? Hill is too tall and long and naturally sized really. And we didn't get to see Michael's career pan out. Collins would've done an old chubby McCallum. He had a peak McCallum running away in the last few rounds when he was a novice. Reggie Johnson would've beaten Benn over 12 unless he got too confident and got suckered in like Reggie Miller and Robbie Sims did for Benn to counter-hook him off the ropes.
Oh and Collins was never beating Jones. He couldn't crack an egg and was so hittable when he mauled in or fell over himself. You don't want to be hittable against Roy Jones Jr
That changes things then but if Jones went to war it would still help Collins unless it was in the center of the ring.
Roy was hardly hit before he moved up to heavyweight and Collins was certainly hit a lot more! The only fighter that could tag Jones at his peak was Griffin but look what Jones did to Griffin when he went on the front foot in the rematch, that`s the way he said he would have gone at Collins had they of fought back then. Eubank dropped Collins and Jones punched a lot harder than Chris.
Jones would have done to Eubank and Benn what he did to Johnson! You contradicted yourself with your stupid Johnson, Benn+Jones triangle! Jones was faster than all the boxers you mentioned and Eubank ducked Jackson because he was the hardest puncher of all time.
Benn isn't without the punchers chance against jones but 9 times out 10 Roy stops Benn mid rounds after winning every round and he'd shut Eubank out 12-0.
I seem to remember Lou Del Valle had him on the canvas.... When you're fighting the likes of Otis Grant, David Telesco, Bryant Brannon and Glen Kelly then it's stands to reason that it wouldn't be that hard to be "hardly hit" as you put it. He was fighting those guys when he could have been fighting Collins, Jackson, Benn, Liles, Nunn etc... The 8 year period between Jones beating Toney and facing Ruiz, the complete lack of any sort of puncher there is VERY eye-opening.
