Terrific posting Knockout Artist, for me this was the peak version of Roy Jones, this version toys with Spinks in a similar fashion to how he did Pazienza imo.

This performance though great, was not his greatest IMO.

    Toney
    Griffin 2
    Ruiz

I rate those 3 higher, possibly the Hill stoppage too. Jones looked similar in the Hall fight as he did to the Woods and Kelly fights IMO, the difference is the style of fighter Hall is, he actually kept coming at Roy, even though he was hurt, which allowed Roy to look even bettter.

And to the sarcastic posters hinting that this performance was because of roids, I don't buy it.

I respect your opinion. Roy was at his peak at 168.

What do you think would have happened if a peak version of Roy at 168, would have fought Spinks at 175?

    Good question..

People tend to forget that 168 Roy had a different style than 175 Roy, especially as Roy got older. 8 punch combinations were a rarity at 175, but you saw much more of them when he was at 168.

The 11th round combo, looked like an 8 punch combo, is probably the best i've ever seen by jones or ANYONE.

    That's right.

Roy was still great at 175, but I think the 1995 version of him was the best.

I keep forgetting about the old same day weigh ins too.

Any idea what Spinks's fight night weight would have been? Was it easy for him to make weight etc?

Talking about Jones' peak, I'd agree that he looked the most physically dominant at 168.

He did however, add the technical wrinkle of committing to body shots once he moved to 175, and that shouldn't be over looked.

I actually havent followed him too closely, i know he was a huge Lhw, and from what fights i have watched, i would give him a fairly good chance at beating Lhw Jones. Which is not something I can say about nearly anyone else.

Very true, Roy's body assaults were a thing of beauty, and one would think a long tall target like Spinks would have felt plenty.

Never forget the sound the shot on Hill made.

As far as a hypothetical with Spinks goes, I think he weighed about 190 on fight night as a LHW.

People remember him for the Tyson fight mainly which is a damn shame, they don't understand that his knees were completely shot by that point.

Spinks was un-orthodox, punching from odd angles but with both precision and power. Jones was the superior athlete and a bigger hitter, but he wasn't smarter than Spinks. (Not a knock on Jones, his ring IQ never got enough credit.)

Maybe it's the generation I'm from, but I have a real hard time ever picking against Jones. He really was special, just a shame his resume never matched his skills, which may be the best of all time.

who is the greatest welsh fighter ever?

    Jimmy Wilde or Freddie Welsh?

Jimmy Wilde easily for me but no question Welsh is 2nd followed by Winstone then proly this horrible to watch supermiddleweight guy that used to slap like a girl instead of punch and fought a buncha bums in the UK then ended his career taking on a shot ATG and actually got KD'd by the guy!

For sure.. Spinks was a beast, much bigger than Roy, had a very odd style, had the power to stop Roy with one punch..

I still have trouble picking against the best fully motivated LHW version of Roy.. Spinks I would give a fair chance though, due to his size and own ability. There is no way that fight would not have been a looker, no matter how it ended.

Same result. Roy was at his best at 168 against other 168 pounders. Against the top Lt. Heavyweights he'd still be lacking in the areas I mentioned (substitute movement for strength if we're taking the smaller Jones). The durability is the big question for me.

I could see Jones beating someone like Harold Johnson, though.
