I agree, those scores, especially the first (117-111... WTF!), are not representitive of the actual fight. Tarver dominated, Jones maybe took a couple of the later rounds. It seems that history has been re-written for Tarver-Jones I. It was a robbery, and Tarver did more than enough to deserve the win. And I'm a big Roy Jones Jr. fan. The crowd in the arena booed like crazy when the decision was announced, which says a lot, given that Tarver isn't exactly Mr Popularity.
The one were Roy was weight drained, the one where he looked horrible and did nothing, the one widely regarded as one of the single worst performances of Roy's career, where he got an absolute gift decsion. Which fight were YOU watching? :huh
Yes I do, I was actually very impressed with Jones that night in an odd way. We had become so accustomed to 'superman Roy' to this untouchable phenom that we never really saw his fighting heart get truely tested.....until that night. He gutted it out and even though he was clearly out of sorts relating to the weight loss, he pulled through in the Championship rounds and won a close but clear decision IMO. Many years since I saw that fight, but that's how I had it back then.
I watched it last week, and I can honestly say that I'm stunned that there so many people who are saying it was a clear win for Jones. IMO, as a big fan of Roy, there is no way he won this fight. Tarver was robbed. I know this doesn't seem to be the popular opinion, but I believe it is the correct one.
Did you watch the British or American version? I agree Tarver won the rounds he won bigger, but numerically he lost the fight, because there were times when he did nothing in the middle rounds. Jones also won the last 2/3 rounds awell.
Very Tough List since his career crossed over between 2 generations of boxers and multiple weight divisions. Based on who he beat and when he beat them with a small factor for style I would make my list like this. 1. James Toney 2. Virgil Hill 3. John Ruiz 4. Montell Griffin II 5. Bernard Hopkins 6. Eric Harding 7. Clinton Woods 8. Otis Grant 9. Reggie Johnson 10. Thomas Tate I left 3 out because they are hard to put into context (Tarver I, Trinidad, McCallum)
It was the British version, for some reason in the first fight, in 2,3 it was American. Love your avatar pic btw.
Thanks man, that seems like a good list. There are a few fights there that I will have to order. What are your thoughts in general on the Trinidad fight?
In terms of what he was capable of without us knowing, due to his drop in weight so quick, it was a pretty good victory, although not exactly his best - I'll agree with you on that. But Tarver wasn't robbed. Tarver threw (and landed) in the last 20-30 seconds of the fight, mainly because Jones was exhausted. Jones dug deep in the later rounds in order to gain the victory, and he did just that. IMO his best 5 are: Toney Hopkins McCallum Hill Griffin Worth mentioning Ruiz and Woods
