If Jones moved up to heavyweight the same year Lewis turned pro how many of the fighters Lewis went on to fight could Jones have beaten the year that Lewis fought those same fighters?
I think Roy is really solid at HW outside of the top 5 of most generations. And would have probably been a legit champ in others. Once you get past the real elite, I think Roy can hang around and could have probably been a top 50 or even 25 HW. RJJ probably doesn't lose until Razor Ruddock vs. Lennox's early career competition. RJJ could also win that fight but I don't think so. I don't think he loses to McCall. RJJ would box Bruno up I think. The bigger guys would suffer the most, I think. And were only able to hit Lewis because Lewis was often stationary and was willing to take some power shots (mostly on the gloves) to give his more accurate power shots. I think Mercer probably would beat RJJ but who knows, Ray was off and on to me. Then it kind of syncs up a bit, I think RJJ probably could have beaten Tyson in 2002 if RJJ had upped the gas and increased his weight at that point. Michael Grant, Franz Botha, idk, those are big tough dudes, but I don't think it's a walkover from either side. I feel like RJJ could have boxed 1999 Holyfield but Holyfield's work would potentially break him down, he still had some zip on his stuff at this point. I don't think RJJ would do much vs. Klitschko. Shannon Briggs would be tough for him. Genuinely no idea about Golota vs. RJJ. Morrison, I think Jones could have boxed, but a loseable fight for RJJ. I also think RJJ could box against Tua. I think that fight has potential for RJJ to be successful for as long as he can hold on. I feel Tua could be jabbed back down into 2nd gear on occasion and had a habit of staying there a little long once he got put there. In short, I think he could have beaten many of Lennox's opponents. A lot of those fights would have been much riskier for RJJ, specifically guys who can hit and box a bit too, like Briggs, Morrison, Botha, Ruddock, Mercer and potentially Golota if he is mentally stable. RJJ struggles with this type of fighter-- a boxer with some pop can time him and put him out. Holyfield, even though a bit older, probably still gets it done. The bottom line is Lennox fought a lot of tough guys and it's hard for me to say Roy beats most of them. But it's hard for me to say he doesn't have a chance against many of them.
Jones Jr. Was very smart and literally at the right place at the right time to fight a guy like Ruiz. Who was a perfect victim for Jones Jr's skills. Ruiz wasn't fast, wasn't a hard puncher, and most importantly wasn't aggressive. Ruiz gave Jones Jr. The room to win the fight. And he took advantage of it. Could Jones Jr. Have done the same against most of Lewis's opponents is very doubtful in my opinion. I believe Jones Jr knew that himself, it's the reason he immediately went back down in weight after the Ruiz fight. Though the money would've been at heavyweight. I doubt very seriously Jones Jr. Would beat a Tua, Bruno, Mercer, Tyson or Holyfield. Even at the time Lewis faced them. All those fighters were far more aggressive than Ruiz, and would've pressed him. And one laspes of concentration from Jones would get him knocked clean out. Jones knew this, it's the reason he was one and done at heavyweight.
