He's hard to evaluate at light heavy from where I'm standing; at least, when it comes to matching him in a h2h sense, having never really faced an elite boxer-puncher bestowed with the right tools to trouble him. I wouldn't pick him with any confidence over the best of his predecessors unless the stylistic angle was in his favour.

****, I thought it said light heavy. Buggery.....

In that case, even less of chance, great though he was.

    Briggs
Rahman might lack the ring IQ to beat him
    Leon Spinks
The Foreman at the end of his title reign (ie. Briggs)
The Ali that showed up pudgy and disinterested against Jimmy Young

Roy Jones could easily beat old Foreman. I would favor Briggs over old Foreman to beat Jones.

Roy JOnes v John L Sullivan - Roy might survive the 4 rounds, maybe, but John L will catch up to him in a 15 round fight. The hoochie coochie running would frustrate and even beat the older John L, but in his prime, john L may be close to as quick as Roy. John L should KO him.

Jim Corbett - Two lightning quick fighters. Both with susceptible chins. Corbett hits much harder and is more proven at the weight. This would be a great fight, and Jones has every chance, but you would expect the straighter hitting and longer reach of Corbett to pay dividends.

Bob Fitzsimmons - Similar speed, although JOnes should have the edge. But Fitz is quick himself and very cagey with a better chin and a lethal punch. It would be kriptonite for Roy. Bob overcomes a large weight discrepancy.

James Jeffries - The much bigger man theoretically should win this easy, with his power overwhelming JOnes. But, the closest that Jeffries fought to a Jones style power was probably Fitzsimmons who landed plenty on Jeffries. While Jones doesnt hit anywhere near as hard as Fitz, he should land a lot more often and should be a lot more elusive. I actually think he suvives and wins a 12 round fight, but Jeffries would fight longer, you would have to think he would catch JOnes before the 20th.

    to be continued.

Marvin Hart - Marvin was a very good fighter, but he wasnt really dominant. He will give Jones JR a good tough fight, but watching what Jones did to good fighters like Toney, you have to think taht Jones repeats the feat against Marvin.

Tommy Burns - A very hard one to get a guage on. Sometimes he is a great boxer, other times he is like a mini Tyson who relies on a big punch. It is true that he was beaten by some other very good middles, but it is also true that he improved after this. He fought often and regularly. I do think he struggles with Roys speed and i lean towards Roy quite a bit, his power does have the potential to Knock out roy, but theoretically, so did James Toney. Roy must start favourite.

Jack Johnson - Jack was as dominant as any other champion. The speed of Jones Jr will cause him problems, and you would expect him to take a lot of punishment. And some do say (probably without grounds) that Jack has a shaky chin. Jack should be an overwhelming favourite. He would nullify Roys speed and reflexes by grappling and landing hard in the clinch. Roy really needs a Ruiz style refereeing performance to win. Jack wouldnt let it happen.

Jess Willard - A very intersting fight. Willard really should be too big. He is unerated today, and Roy has faced nothing like Willard in his career to say he is ready for a Vitali Klitchsko styled attack. It isnt possible for Willard to lose because he is slow compared to Jones, but he is going to land his Jab, and stop Roy from getting in close and he is going to hurt Roy. It isnt impossible for Roy to win, but if you tip him, you should tip Roy against most modern heavys. Willard shoud be too big. His fights are generally to the finish and if Roy cant KO Ruiz in 12 is he any chance to KO Willard? Willard starts heavy favourite

Jack Dempsey - Not a good fight for Roy. Jack should steamroll him. Saying this, Jack wasnt that much bigger than a light heavyweight, so Roy shouldnt be totally discarded as he was a great Light heavy. Roy jones Jr should start the favourite.

Gene Tunney - What a great fight. Two lightning quick fighters. Two all time great light heavyweights, both fighting at heavy. Tunney has the better chin and hits straighter, but Roy is definitely fast, although hischin may be the difference. And Tunneys genaralship, he always finds a way. Tunney a slight favourite.

can you please show the rest of us the footage of sullivan that you saw to make the decision that he would beat jones? i love watching old fights and reading about the history of the sport as much as the rest of you but some people on these sites are so full of crap it's embarrassing. corbett, really?? the guy throws a backhand at a point in the fight vs fitz. boliermaker, i'm sure your knowledge of the fighters of yesteryear is impressive but all of these guys would have hell vs jones and some of them couldn't even compete with jones imo.

A prime Spink's would beat the **** out of a heavyweight Jones.

If he did one thing well it was pressuring his opponents, and the man had very good power in both hands.
