Bingo, and when the reflexes waned it showed a fighter who didn't know how to slip punches. It also revealed a weak chin. I seriously doubt Roy would get in the ring with Rocky but if he did he'd look very good for a while but Rocky did have some underrated abilities, like cutting off the ring. Roy would never hurt Marciano at all and when the needle on Roy's gas tank starts entering the red he'll become more stationary and Rock starts his death march hitting him on the arms, shoulders hips and eventually the head. It'll take several minutes for the EMT'S to get Jones back on his feet.
Roy stands ZERO chance against Rocky, he wouldnt be able to hurt him and his speed only gets him so far 3 rounds of less and its ugly Marciano shatters Roy and potentially gives him serious brain damage hopefully not worse.
Fifteen rounds is a long time against a relentless, granite chinned, slugger/swarmer who can throw 100 punches in the 15th round. I don't think Jones can knock Marciano out, and I don't have confidence that Jones chin can survive when it's eventually cracked. I think the Chavez vs Taylor analogy is an apt one.
Jones would make Marciano look really amateurish at times with his blinding speed and jump out to an early lead on the cards …Jones left hook (griffin II style) would have a lot of success vs Marciano’s in his crouch however Marciano was a two fisted assassin who could knock you out with 1 punch or throw 110 punches in a round and break you down. Roy doesn’t have the size length reach strength or durability to keep Marciano off him and take his shots for very long. Marciano would trap jones on the ropes at one point and hammer away. Jones would try to counter but Marciano weaves and rolls in his crouch and comes up with beautiful left hooks and chopping rights. Jones wouldn’t get out until the bell rang. Then Jones would be dejected. We know jones can’t take Marciano’s beat punch. I believe Marciano can take Jones best punch. jones doesn’t have the punch to seriously threaten Marciano, who will take 1 or 2 if it means finding jones chin. Marciano KO 11 Roy Jones. Jones ahead on scorecards. Jones knocked out cold
He would absolutely be able to hurt him as did some ancients like Moore and Walcott. For as long as it lasts, 5 or 6 rounds, Marciano might squeak one while taking more damage than is recommended. As far as talent and skill, these guys aren't in the same country code, let alone zip code. Roy would win 10 out of 10, 100 out of 100.
Marciano would ko Roy 100 out of,,,oh wait he wouldnt because after the first one Roy would be on life support. Who did Roy ko above 168?
It’s not a knock on RJJ that he wouldn’t be able to hurt Marciano. He just wasn’t that affective at the higher weights. Some are very delusions here into thinking Marciano couldn’t really beat anyone and his fantasy career and wins over hall of fame fighters never happened or only happened because of luck.
Roy was fit when in his prime, what makes you think he couldn't go 12 rounds moving and keeping his distance ?!?
Because this isnt no skills no power Ruiz, this is Marciano and he would catch Rpy and that would be it. Roy would never even take this fight, its not a knock on him the simple fact is he would be destroyed.
Disagree somewhat. Roy was excellent at slipping and pulling away from and countering punches and while no Chris Eubank, he took shots from B-Hop, Toney and others without too much issue. Nobody really called him chinny until he went up and came down too fast in weight Vs Tarver and subsequently, Johnson sparking him. However, having decent whiskers up to 175 lbs doesn't prepare you to deal with Rocco. An aggressive fighter that throws 80+ haymakers, has subtle defence, his own leaping left hook and in slow motion is actually quite adept at punching with and through his man - this isn't a good fight for Roy if that man is naturally heavier, more aggressive and doesn't respect his power/will walk through punches in the belief that his own are more damaging. Roy always went to the ropes when significantly pressured and whilst he could move his head, he's not moving his torso, his arms or his hips enough to avoid taking Rocco's power. I don't see how he survives 15 rounds. Wrong mentality of opponent, wrong natural strength and power differential - not a fight that Roy even takes prime for prime.
Marciano wouldn't be waiting around for the perfect opportunity to let his hands go like John Ruiz. Ruiz was tailored made mentally and stylistically, for Jones Jr. to beat him. Jones Jr. knew that, that's why he choose to fight him. He wasn't looking for a serious challenge at Heavyweight, he was looking for someone he could beat without much of a risk of losing....... ( May Jr. mastered this deception at welterweight a few years later) Marciano wouldn't be waiting on the perfect opportunity to press his attack, his pressure on Jones Jr, would eventually CREATE the opportunity. A very big difference in mindset and style from what we saw with Ruiz. Jones Jr, would make Marciano look foolish early on, he was truly a freak athlete disguised as a boxer. But his habit of going to the ropes and keeping his hands low , would eventually lead to him getting ko'ed. Marciano would hit him anywhere and everywhere when he got the opportunity. Those punches landed on the hips, shoulders, and arms, wouldn't look like much early on , but around the 8th rd, Jones Jr, would began to show the wear and tear. Punches that were missing by a foot or so now are only missing by inches......... Until one doesn't miss.... Jones Jr only way to win a fight over 12 rds against Marciano is to severely cut him early enough for the fight to be stopped. If that doesn't happen, Marciano ko's him with in 10 11 rds after falling behind on the scorecards.
i get it Roy’s handspeed reflexes and athleticism could make Marciano look really bad but take into consideration Marciano was a killer against men without height reach weight or strength advantages. Roy has none of those advantages or at least not enough to wear Marciano would be at a severe deficiency Then let’s talk about Power and Durability. Just huge huge advantages for Rocky here This isn’t some 6’5 guy putting Marciano at the end of a jab. Roy was a master in center of ring but when he would get cornered he covered up and took a lot of shots, never knew how to clinch . Marciano didn’t fight men as fast as Jones but he fought men as skilled. And he went undefeated with an incredible knockout percentage. jones could open up marcianos face with triple left hooks and blinding straight right leads and uppercuts …but Marciano just may be that special fighter h2h in a p4p sense. On a p4p basis, Marciano was a 1%er in power, strength, durability and stamina, 4 huge traits. Jones was really a blown up super middle. He couldn’t take a heavy punch off a 175-185lb fighter who could hit, and Marciano was one of the all times hitters. Jones bulked himself up nicely to 193 vs Ruiz but he didn’t improve his chin. Marciano wasn’t some bandy legged low guard 1920s stiff. His style would translate very well in modern cruiser weight division. I believe any sub 190lber would have to go through hell to beat Marciano. Would jones be able to? I have my doubts
Not a super skilled fighter? Even though I wholeheartedly disagree, let's assume that is true, who cares. Whatever made him almost untouchable in his prime, is exactly what he'd bring to the table in this fight. I'd love me some of that unskilledness in spades please.
Tough fight to know how it plays out. I can see it go either way depending how Roy approaches the fight and if it's over 12 or 15.
