I'll take Roy at middle over Hearns...Stylistically Hearns does pose problems, but Roy poses even bigger problems for Hearns. Jones by TKO in five.
He was not at his peak early on at MW, but the best Jones at MW was damn near his prime. His fight with Toney was just upon moving up to 168, and was arguably his best performance. You think he improved that much from his MW career after one fight? I forget the key factors? Yet you compare Hearns/Jones to Forrest/Mosley, forgetting that Jones is neither similar in style to Mosley, nor similar in size in comparison to his opponent. Jones didn't show a jab against Virgil Hill even at LHW, that's not how he outboxed the boxers, that's how he outboxed the smaller fighters he could keep at bay like Vinny Paz. When did Jones ever need a jab to outbox the boxers? His style was to use movement, feints, and counter-punching to beat them. Watch the fights, don't just BS.
I have watched the Hearns/Hagler fight and not seen much of an effective jab. Also, that fight is not how I see the Jones/Hearns fight playing out, so I don't see Hearns troubling Roy with it like you seem to think he did Hagler. Maybe I'll have to rewatch that fight, because I remember no effective jab from Hearns.
Yeah do watch it again, because he is jabbing, just to no real affect because of the fight he ends up in. That fight is absolutley not how a fight with Jones would pan out, obviously, but it is an example of Hearns working the punch well (technically if not in terms of deployment) at 160.
Jones would beat Hearns via KO. Jones' power was at it's most devastaing at middleweight. He probably hit harder than Barkley and Hagler at the weight. Jones' movement and defensive awareness are nice attributes he has up his sleeve in this match-up. He'd probably TKO Hearns during the mid-late rounds.
I think I agree. Jones would hurt Hearns and Jones would follow up, maybe around 10. Be interesting to see how he got on with the Hearns jab though.
Hearns was far more accurate and sharper than any Roy Jones was. No he wasn't faster but timing beats speed and he would neutralize Jones's handpeed and footspeed by not being in range and using his natural longer arms/reach by out boxing Jones from a distance. Jones is vulnerable for straight right hands and jabs is the key to speed fighters, which is why a find Forrest/Mosley a great comparison. Forrest= a brilliant technically sound fighter that had better pure boxer ability than the smaller speedster, knew how to take advantage of his longer reach and kept the fight technical. Mosley= shorter speed fighter that is vulnerable to straight shots and had every atheletic advantage over Forrest known to man. Didn't mean a damn thing. Forrest was still able to neutralize and overcome that by simply boxing from a distance, countering effectively and staying with the jab. After reviewing the Harding, Toney, Tarver, Hopkins and Ruiz fights, i have seen that Jones has always fought cautiously against the elite fighter or power punches. Also, the second half of Hearns success came at middleweight or above. He was the middleweight champion, super middleweight champion, light heavyweight champion and has stoppages at cruiserweight at as well so i don't get that impression. He is bigger than the Roy that fought Hopkins and that fight was Roy's last at middleweight. Roy started to put on weight and mass as he went up peaking at super middleweight. In the Hopkins fight, Jones also had tendencies to lay on the ropes, which is why Hopkins found a home for his right hand towards the end of the fight. Hearns feast on opponents that lays on the ropes. Look at how he does Duran or Cuevas. He fires off a quick barrage of punches that are lightning fast. The only person to catch Roy on the chin back then was Dell Valle and you seen what happened. Roy's chin has always been questionable in my eyes. It was Jones/Hearns if i am remembering correctly. When you couldn't find a way to win the debate, you punked out of it by saying something like ''i will just repeat myself'' then i believe you called me mind boggling and annoying. Also, why would i send someone a message and tell them that you won a debate? Him and i were talking about something completely different in a particular thread and he asked me about how the debate went, and i simply told him that you won.
The fight with Toney was grossly overrated. Toney had to be hospitalized and weighed in at 214 LBS 2 weeks before the fight and you call that a legit performance? Please, i call it taking advantage of a hospital patient. Roy kept post poning the fight because he knew that Toney would get out of shape and not take the fight seriously. Also, yes. He improved a lot since he fought Hopkins at middleweight. He was bigger (steriods) and he used his jab effectively. His jab is what cut up Pazienza and kept John Ruiz honest at heavyweight so i would say he imporved a lot. Forrest is a taller technical boxer puncher, huge right hand, longer reach than Mosley and better technically sound. Mosley is a speed boxer puncher that is open for straight shots and has ever athletic advantage over his taller opponent, which doesn't mean a thing since both Forrest and Hearns has the ability to neutralize it by using their surprior boxing ability. Jones didn't do much against Hill. He just came out and overwelmed him with that body shot quickly. Jones used the jab against Ruiz and Pazienza at super middleweight. Jones didn't have a jab at middleweight and was inexperienced. He only had 21 fights at that weight and was green. He was fighting another green contender in Hopkins for the belt thenn moved up. You would actually favor a green Roy Jones over an experienced legend that could get through the fight on experience alone? Please
Do you guys now see why I can't help but be tempted to put this guy on ignore? Roy kept post-poning the fight in order for Toney to come in out of shape? Now you're just resorting to flat-out lying?
Do you have a short term memory lost? On the other site, i even gave you the link to the story that confirmed it. We have went over this a milion times.
The story(a very biased article about Toney's career, making excuse after excuse for everything that went wrong) said nothing about Roy post-poning the fight, it simply stated some highly debatable account of Toney being hospitalized prior to the fight. And I'm looking through my PM's at ***********, and I can't seem to find that message anywhere. What did you delete it just now?
How can i erase what is in your messages? I left it as a comment on boxing-scene so check your profile.
Found it. Says nothing about Jones post-poning the fight anywhere. Also, I'll post it for everyone to see how biased the article was in the first place. http://lightsout10.tripod.com/toney_biography.htm
