I've got Conn somewhere around 40.

Originally I had him in a default high position but then I began looking into him and I must admit I didn't have him very high until lately he's starting to grow on me again.

Hiya Luf. I think you're way off on this one. Louis "allowed" nothing. If one watches the available film of the bout it is clear that Joe was doing everything within his power to get Billy out of there and was clearly perplexed at his inability to do so. Conn stunned, staggered, outboxed and outpunched Joe.

If there had been a microphone in his corner I'm sure we would have heard his trainer giving him something along the lines of an Angelo Dundee "You're blowin it son! You're blowin' it!" talking to. He was in severe danger of losing his title and only Conn's carelessness (and Joe's great ability to capitalize on this mistake) saved Joe's championship.

The problem is it wasn't the only time, he had done this (leaning toward slugging too much) in several bouts, not just with Louis.

True. Versus Oscar Rankins and several others. It wasn't too hard to get Billy's "Irish" up!

Even the tough Polish boy Teddy Yarosz, who was a total non-slugger, managed to sucker Conn into a slugging match in their third fight (which the more cagey, experienced and equally tough Yarosz won).

Agree with this, Conn got too confident and aggressive and wanted to put on a show, he paid for it. You could argue Louis suckered him in I suppose, but I don't think so. Same thing with the Walcott rematch for me, he thought he needed to be aggressive to get a decision and paid for it. Box and move masters, mastering the angles with lateral movement was Louis's kryptonite though

I don't agree about the perplexity at all. I saw patience and strategy.

Still I like to remember what he won as opposed to what he lost.

I don't think that Conn necisarily got careless.

Looking at the film, it apears that Louis might just have caught him on the ropes.

There were only so many aces in the pack at the end of the day.
