Clinton Woods went on to prove himself a worthy titlist and world-class operator after this arse-kicking. His trilogy with Glen Johnson is one of the hidden gems of British boxing.

Back then Roy was on another level. This fight was just before he moved up to heavy, look at the difference between how good Jones is here and and how **** he is in Tarver 1. Roy should've retired after Ruiz.

I wonder how long RJJ could have gone on till without being beaten if he never ruined his body going up to heavyweight and coming back down again.

Probably another 3 or 4 years, and a record of 52-1.

With all respect to Joe... who is great in his own right. IMO, there's no way he would have beaten Roy in his prime.

based on the fight against woods? The same woods that made a 40-year old Tarver look like a juggernaut? We will never know, how a fight between joe and roy would have been unfolded, but please don't make a judgement based on this. joe in his prime pretty much matches roy's handspeed and we have never seen roy having to go up against someone like that.

You're right, Woods was not much of a test. I'm sure Joe would have made him look just as bad in there if they ever faught.

But don't get me wrong, I'm not basing it on that fight alone.
And I'm not one to say Roy would have wiped the floor with him... I see it as a close fight... maybe even a toss-up... but with the slight edge going to Jones when all was said and done.

Like you say... We'll never know...
