The Pensacola News Journal is reporting, that Roy Jones doesn't want to wast time (again) and maybe stepping into the ring again in November. According to promoter Murad Muhammad , the no.1 choice would be a fight against WBO-champion Zsolt Erdei. Erdei is no.2 ranked by The Ring and fightnews.com ... and if you like, you may call him the linear champion (because he beat Gonzales, who won against Michalczewski before, who unified titles against Virgil Hill). No.2 choice for Jones seems to be Glen Johnson, who KOed him some years ago and is currently waiting for another title shot against Clinton Woods. Next choice maybe Trinidad ... but Trinidad wont come out of retirement before 2008. http://www.pensacolanewsjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070801/SPORTS/708010317/1002
Johnson outworks Jones to a decision or stops him late. Haven't seen Erdei, so no prediction. Jones probably outboxes Tito.
I guess that the present version of Roy Jones will have a lot of trouble with Erdei probably losing a wide point decision against the skilled Hungarian.
Jones's legs are gone so he no longer has the movement to stay away fron Johnson the whole fight......
The Pensacola News Journal was my daily newspaper growing up, and I can tell you that Roy would say whatever was on his mind at that moment, and it would change the next day. I do hope, though, since it's pretty clear he'll continue fighting, that he goes ahead and pushes hard for a fight with Erdei. There would seem to be too many obstacles for that fight to happen, though (Erdei won't want to leave Germany/Hungary, Roy will want a big cut of the payout, etc.), but that seems like a logical step up and would be a significant title fight for him.
I wish the press would just stop covering his bull****. Hes clearly finished, but he talks all this **** as if hes still actually a player in world boxing. Just shut the **** up and retire RJJ.
I just see Roy as too much of a businessman to take these kinds of risks. He wouldn't fight DM in Germany in his prime, and now he's going to fight some German young gun as an old man? Nope. Johnson? Deep down, he wants no part of Glen. What Roy ought to do, if he wasn't so damn proud, is fight a no hoper like Muriqi on ESPN to remind the casual fan he's still alive and can still "look" thrilling. Then he could cash out in '08 with a bout against Trinidad, Hopkins, or the Dawson - Tarver winner. All fights he could win, all fights that would make for a very decent payday.
Roy used to be one of my favorites, but now I think he should just retire. Retire now Roy! Retire off a win.
Im sure Erdei would make decent coin in Germany aswell. Roy might not offer enough to make it worth his while. BHOP is probably the only fight against an elite fighter where he wont get embarrassed in, though he will still loose. Loosing the BHOP would be expected and I dont think Nard quite has the pop or the desire to stop Roy brutally.
