Maybe I was too unfair to Roy Jones by matching him with the powerful and menacing Sonny Liston. Let's keep it this time within more reasonable physical boundaries and have for your consideration an imaginary matchup between Roy Jones and Jose Torres of Puerto Rico, who was lightheavyweight champion from 1965-66. Scheduled for 15, who wins it?
Pastrano said he "saw yellow spots" when Torres hit him with that body shot that put him on the canvas. But Jones has a good body attack too. I take Jones by UD.
Yeah, I think it's pretty much a no-brainer about Jones vs. Liston. Jones, despite his speed and skill, didn't have the size, and more importantly the chin,to deal with a Sonny Liston, but it would not have mattered where Liston was to hit Jones, it would have set Jones up for his execution, and that's all it would be. A real short, ugly mismatch, but since the Jones fans saw their man as a heavyweight in addition to everything else, then it's fair game to offer Jones as a sacrificial lamb to Sonny. As for Torres, maybe it's hard feelings that he beat one of my favorite fighters, or maybe it's better to say BOXERS in Willie Pastrano, and beat him so cruelly, that I'd be rooting for Jones in this one. Floentino Fernandez, he must have been a real bad dude, huh? He ko'ed Torres, and actually broke Gene Fullmer's arm during their title match.
That left to the liver, was, from what I've read, probably instrumental in contributing to Willie's eventual death, which came from liver problems.
Thanks bravecubs, same to ya man, you've got some good posts, and good memories of a golden age of boxing.
