he did roy wasnt hitting him then when he did he was kneeling on the canvas.i think it robbed montell of a win that he could of got i persoannly feel that montell got hit with a few shots while down and thought im ahead on the cards if i drop i could get a technical decision and did the face first routine. montell is severely underate espeaciialy for his size
Jones was getting stronger and Griffin was weakening. It was pretty easy to see where the fight was headed, particularly given the score at the time and the KD that had to be factored in. And, of course, Griffin may have been stopped legitimately thereafter. But Roy obviously deserved the DQ.
True story, for what its worth...a few days before that rematch I was on the phone with Roy's lawyer's son who was coming into town for the fight...I asked him how RJ felt, etc...and he told me this, "Roy was over here the other night talking to my dad and he said we could bet our house and all our bank accounts on the fight not going more than two rounds." That was a good five days before the fight.
this is the fight when roy became my favorite fighter. i had always admired his skills and knew he was the best fighter in the world but this rematch was brutal. i remember a few days before the fight, philip holiday was fighting shane mosley on hbo and both jones and griffin were there. jones was going crazy and griffin looked scared shitless. i'm not sure anyone that ever fought at 175 could have beat jones that night. in the first fight, i had griffin up a point going into the 9th. griffin went down and jones was on his way to a decision win at worst if not for the dq. imo, the dq was the best thing that happened to jones. he got his fire back for a few years after that fight. i agree, roy should have been dq'ed but why does tyson get to hit norris intentionally way after the bell and it's ruled a no contest. or better yet, why does riddick bowe get a no contest after hitting buster mathis, jr when he was down??
I think Roy is right in terms of the Referee not being there when he should have. It's hard to be right there every second when guys are running all around the ring, but a fighter can get caught up in the moment. A DQ is the only rational thing to do in that situation I think, but Roy had a point in saying you never know if that fighter is going to get up off a knee and hit back while you're on the offensive. As far as him really coming out to hurt Griffin and silence the critics, I agree. When he gave tours to school kids he would talk about how he liked to fight as a kid for fun, but never to hurt anybody, and in the post-fight interview he talked about how he doesn't like to hurt guys but he'll do what he has to do. I think by nature he likes to play around and dominate by boxing better and using his athleticism, but an angry RJJ could KO a whole lot of opponents early IMO.
