I recall back in about 1995 when Roy and Sweat Pea were the consensus top two p4p fighters in the world that a potential, ultimate p4p superfight was mooted between the two men. It was shortly after Whitaker had beaten Julio Cesar Vasquez at 154 and the proposal was they meet at 158 with a morning of the fight weigh in. For whatever reason it never happened of course but I'm curious how you folks think it might've played out? For those who think Jones was simply too big remember he was having huge problems making Middleweight as early as 1993 and sweating down below that when he'd been campaigning at 168 could feasibly take something substantial out of him. And don't forget Whitaker handled a bigger, faster, younger, peak Oscar De La Hoya very well so maybe he could do likewise with a weight drained Jones Jnr. Your thoughts :think
Pea would lose pretty clearly, near shutout kind of stuff...only his savvy and smarts see him make the rounds and he might not. Pernell was on the slide by the Vasquez bout and the weight didnt help either.
I think the Vasquez performance put the nail in the coffin for any catchweight idea, and rightly so. Roy would have had to have been DLH vs. Pacman style drained for Pea to have even a remote chance.
Jones may well KO Whitaker quick, but Whitakers skill may well see him cause Roy problems, although I'd go with a Jones KO all the same
Even badly drained I have no doubt Jones would end it quickly. Not because he was better but because he would have been much bigger, skilled, as fast and hit far too hard. Pea on the other hand was already a bit past it, slowed already a bit, was less mobile than he used to be and the more weight would have made him even slower and less mobile. Whitaker stands no chance here.
