And, he relied way too much on his speed and reflexes that diminished as he got older. Jones got knocked out by shots that he would have absorbed better had he kept his guard up and quit the Apollo Creed crap. His hands were always too low. Notice how Hopkins guard was always up and in proper position and he became more disciplined as he got older? Jones dropped his hands to his waist all the time in showboat fashion.
Conn outboxed joe louis for the majority of their first fight before getting a bit too brave. That performance is greater than any performance of jones career. I think jones is top ten at lhw but i'd favour charles, moore, fitz, langford, greb, foster, burley and conn to beat him. It's a shame roy never beat the best lhw rival of his career.
all you have to do is watch footage to understand why prime fitz wouldn't beat prime roy. charles would give roy fits and visa versa. if they fought twice, they probably split the fights. spinks is a tough matchup and foster would pose problems too but people need to understand roy is not mike quarry or chris finnegan. i don't agree when people say that fighters like moore, langford, burley or conn wouldn't have a chance vs roy but i do favor roy in these fights.
Jones' chin was not too bad as this video shows. Against Del Valle he got right up and dominated but that's the only time he's been down in his career. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IRwQADvvcY[/ame] With Foster, though he was in a higher division he was less comfortable in, he found a speedy fighter in Ali making him look this: This content is protected
for those of you who don't understand how good jones was in his prime watch this [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F55hvUEpNE&feature=player_embedded[/ame]
Tough call seeing as none of the guys listed fought anyone like Jones. Someone said Ali against Foster but in terms of speed, even Ali was NOTHING like Jones. Jones's record is bashed a little harder than it should be, he beat some quality guys and barely broke a sweat doing it. Charles, Fosterr, etc all had hard tough fights. Jones never REALLY did because he was so much more gifted than anyone he fought. Put him in any era and he'd still be just as fast and hit just as hard.
There are certainly a good number of boxers (LHWs) who could KO, possibly outpoint Roy. But there are none I would favour over prime Roy at the weight.
A truly delusional fanboy you are...bull****....punches that he was once able to avoid because of his great physical gifts now found their way to their intended target and he wasn't blessed with the mandible to withstand this..that he had an offense that served as his best defense didn't hurt either. Those hopeless parttime postmen and cherry picked designated victims that he had such a steady diet on succumbed to the flashy moves and deadly firepower he was able to subdue them with...and he was never truly tested....and that Del Valle shot wasn't that serious a shot..he was as much off balance as anything. And what seious leather did Hopkins and Toney manage to hit him with? Zilch..because Jones was atop the world in terms of his physical gifts...his uncanny reflexes. When Ali eventually slowed down and transitioned into new ways of dealing with the inevitable punishment that came his way, he was more successful because he could at least take a punch..he had a legendary set of whiskers that could withstand the incoming bombs that occasionally came his way..some can take it better than others..
Horse****...Hopkins gets a free pass for what another fighter...a white fighter especially, would be condemned for.
i understand your point but don't read much into what bhop says before fights. i'm white and i met bhop after his win vs tito in '01. couldn't have been nicer but if someone like calzaghe made a statement like "i'll never lose to a black man" most people would go ape ****.
Yes, Virgil used to deliver the mail. And Bernard was an auto mechanic's helper. James Toney taught school for a while. And John Ruiz once worked in the hosiery department. Montel delivered pizza for much of his career. Glenn Kelly worked in kangaroo control. Gonzalez had a taco stand. Derek Harmon worked as a bouncer. Otis was a hospital janitor. Most of these dudes were part-time bums, but they made good fodder for Roy's rise.
