Roy's chin gets underrated by how his career has ended. It wasn't great, but it wasn't glass.

    Roy outboxes Rock. UD12

i know that's the consensus but when was jones hurt in his prime? when was he hurt with glancing blows?

i don't think anyone denies that marciano knocks out jones if he lands but it's swinging a little far towards a stiff fart knocking out roy at this point

if he had a history of being knocked out (terry norris) or knocked down (patterson) than i get it. he was knocked down ONCE, for about one second, anywhere near his prime.

I'm an ol' white guy, 'n I thought Jones was a wunderkind -- AMAZING, k. Rocky's just a bad matchup for him, 'specially over the ol' championship distance.

I'm not a Jones hater but can we get serious please ... Roy has nothing to hold Rocky off so he has to run for his life against a guy that will come at him for every minute of every round ... we saw how that played out v.s, Johnson ... can you imagine what Marciano would do to him ?

as ridiculous as the johnson comparison is, you're likely right. disregarding the shot jones you cited, even a prime jones would be running all night. maybe he lands an extremely lucky shot like the one that broke ruiz's nose but that would just **** rocky off.

i see anywhere from an 8-12th round KO for rocky

this is the **** i'm talking about. ok, 35 yr old post-heavy jones loses to rocky as well as a lot of other fighters. nowhere close to his prime but this is the argument you get. fighters that came at jones in his prime were ko'ed. i understand that those fighters shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with marciano but if you can't see the difference in the '95 version of jones to the '04 version you need help.

maybe so. jones never had to fight 15 but i also never saw him gassed after 12 at his best. of course he would be pressured like never before vs rocky and jones liked to fight at his own pace.

John Ruiz is not 1/20th as good as Rocco. Jones is broken within 8.

I am the last guy who gets misty eyed over tales of yore... However... watching and studying the Marciano footage and seeing Jones, Jr ringside and live on the TV, I have surmised a few things. No one Jones, Jr. ever faced had the clout that Marciano possessed, along with the uncanny ability of making himself a small target. Jones, Jr. is not a attrition fighter, but I think in this match Marciano would enforce his style of attrition and that Jones, Jr would wilt quickly. Also, Marciano beat and mostly stopped some of the craftiest mother****ers ever to enter the ring... Walcott, Charles, Moore... I would feel safe betting Marciano on a stoppage over 15 rounds.

He'd wilt long before 15, but that's a class post.

Jones was a great fighter, I dont think he automaticaly beats marciano but he deserves a chance here.

The problem I have, and i think others do too is great fighters from marciano's era were great fighters without juicing themselves up. modern greats are great too but it kind of tarnishes it for historians when champs like jones have been caught out.

The thread in general is as ridiculous as your statement about the 35 year old Jones v.s. the 35 year old Johnson ... Jones fought a very weak assortment of 175 pounders prior to Tarver and Johnson , both of whom were his age. He could not take a quality pressure fighter like Johnson ... Marciano would have wrecked him.

Can Jones hurt and or KO Marciano? I think so allot of RJJs LHW opposition weighed 185-190 in the ring, that's the same size as Rocky.

i don't think he can hurt him personally, however did rocky fight ANYONE nearly as fast and elusive as roy? the size difference is negligible at best but the difference in speed between these fighters is astronomical. the trickiest fighter, the most elusive opponent i can think of was walcott. jones is faster, thought not nearly as crafty, than walcott.

over 12, roy has a chance to stay well out of range and off the ropes. if he can do that, keep it in the centre and slow down the pace of the fight to 30-40 punches a round, he MAY win

    Rebuttals:

1)Who ever reduced Marciano to that low a punch out put?? If charles couldn't do it, Jones sure as hell can't!

(why not? jones and charles are different fighters and roy was quite good at highlighting his athleticism over his opponents skills)

2)Rocky would corner him as Jones never fought anyone NEARLY as resilient or skilled at cutting off the ring

(Nor did Rocky fight anyone as fast as Jones so that's negated. Nor anyone who gives less of a **** about giving a boring, crowd hating performance)
