I totally agree with the highlighted points. RJJ wouldn't have to baloon up like he did against Ruiz so this isn't the fight that people need to watch before coming to a decision. Simply watch any of his fights from '97-'99 and you'll witness a hand speed/reflexes/power combination never seen before or since in that weight range(175-190).
Top 10 ATG HW; two fisted KO power and a granite chin vs great lhw; supreme athlete; suspect chin; decent power. How does RJJ keep Marciano off him for 15 rounds? If he did, he would be engaging like Haye vs Klit and lose a decision. Prime RJJ wakes up staring at the lights above the ring. I refer to the fight with Ruiz when RJJ threw one punch and clinched, stating without a doubt that this tactic would not work against Marciano during the Rock's era.
I think a 185 pound, 1957 Floyd Patterson was just as fast as Jones and a much bigger puncher ... of course different style ...
Patterson is certainly a much more proven heavyweight puncher as he KO'd legit heavies. He had a great left hook.
Great point. :good This is the sort of RJJ who should be considered in this match-up, a heavyweight by '40s & '50s size standards. [yt]mTqKxzdnIBY[/yt]
Much bigger puncher. Floyd had a hook that could and did flatten heavyweights. Jones was not a big puncher at 175 let alone for a heavyweight. A good puncher but not a big one ...
Yeah Jones was a freak, and a better boxer, but Rocky was a better fighter and harder puncher. I think how many rounds could have a lot to do with the outcome. If Rocky turned it into a brawl I think he could win, but if Roy dances around and stays away from major damage he takes a dec. A lot like Duran, and Sugar
Nostalgia aside, this is a 50/50 fight. Marciano wasn't the kind of imposing HW who could physically overwhelm Jones. Roy never got by anyone like Rocky, but Rocky never faced the athleticism of Jones. Marciano can't win a decision against Jones, so this really is a timebomb whether he can land and get him out of there. It's 50/50.
Uh no but he certainly had a penchant for assraping even durable movers and technical boxers from a lower weight class. Awkwardness like Jones has is great against thinking fighters who are trying to hit and not get hit. Against pressure fighters, huge difference since they are awkward and incredibly agressive.
Slow, lumbering fighters like Marciano are made to order for Jones. Plenty of guys tried to pressure him, but most gave up early because they got tagged by counters they couldn't see. Nearly every opponent he faced in his prime talked about "making him fight," and then after a few rounds went into a shell. Even Hopkins went into a shell despite pressuring Roy with his feet (he just wouldn't throw). But we're talking about tremendous HW power, so that's why it's 50/50. Still, you guys acting like power, stamina and heart necessarily overcome speed are being ignorant of the history of the sport. This would be a great fight that could go either way.
Prime for Prime Marciano is made to order for Roy. He wouldn't be able to stop him, but he'd beat him up and win a comfortable points decision.
When did Roy face someone who could remotely punch as hard, as often and for as long as Marciano did? When did Roy ever prove he could take a punch from an elite heavyweight puncher? Is Roy cuter and slicker than Walcott or Charles or even LaStarza?
