    Great post,

At one point, I actually have had similar thoughts in the past ( although always favoring Marciano. ) Jones was one of the most athletic professional boxers of all time and his speed and skill would have to be taken seriously, against anyone who was even remotely close to him in size, ( which Rocky was. ) its also ridiculous to say that his chin was shaky, when in fact he didn't suffer his first knockout loss until he was something like 36 years of age and against a very hard light heavyweight puncher who had his number stylistically. I'd still pick the rock to win, but wouldn't be surprised to see a Jones decision.

agreed. i don't favour jones but to discount him completely seems ill advised. even though i don't think roy has much, if any, chance i don't think he gets knocked out by the first punch, gets raped by rocky, gets cornerned and battered in 2 rounds, etc. he'd lose in the last half to a rocky that just keeps getting stronger as rounds go by

Well let's face it.. Marciano made his living fighting a fair number of men who were at one point or another light heavyweights and even middle weights, and struggled with a few of them. Most of those guys did not have the abilities of a prime Roy Jones. Therefore, its not out of the question that Jones could have won, or at the very least given him hell.

We've been through this, and I just named you because you're the biggest Jones apollogist that I know of on the board, so no disrespect. Also, that's a fairly objective post.

It's not that I dislike Jones at all; I quite like him- I just take into consideration everything I know and have seen of him. He's a likable character.

I agree with Jorodz that people tend to be harsh on Jones around these parts, but in this matchup, we have a guy who doesn't want to mix it up vs a guy who mixes it up exclusively...

I will go with the assertion that Jones, while not "fragile", isn't the most durable and also ripe to be KO'd by punchers. Don't give me the "he was coming down in weight" baloney...

I've already stated this previously, but to clarify, Jones was superhuman and a marvel. A truly amazing athlete. It just happens that Marciano is way wrong for him, although I wouldn't rule out Jones knocking him down ala JJW or Moore. Marciano's reaction would be the same, wipe his gloves and proceed to wear him down until the inevitable KO.

fair and objective. stylistically, rocky sucks for jones. it's not a matter of quality or skill for me but mariciano is (on paper) kryptonite for jones. just the same, i feel jones would make rocky look silly at times and take a lead on the scorecards...until rocky wonders what all the fuss is about and corners roy, swings away and busts him up

I think it's a lot to ask for for Jones. He didn't do nearly enough against this type of opposition to prove his worth. The thing is, it's alright to look good or even well against Marciano for 3, 4, 5, or even 6 rounds. But it's not a sprint it's a marathon, more so than ever when Marciano is the opponent on the other side of the ring against you. And to outright win a grueling 15 round contest where your character will never be more tested is asking a lot. Jones didn't achieve enough to be able to prove he could win a fight like this. I'm not discounting that he can't compete or even make it a good fight with Marciano in a 12 round fight. But a 15 round fight with Marciano at his absolute peak of powers? Not Marciano against his one off performance against a blown up nonthreatening Cockell whom he referred to before the match as a "bum"... not Marciano against LaStarza I or Ted Lowry. Marciano at his best. I don't think Jones' athletic ability and speed would be enough. I don't think his mobility was great enough by the time he was matured enough to compete at HW to beat Marciano. And his durability... well it doesn't enough need to be mentioned. Marciano by KO.

good post but i disagree with the coming down in weight baloney. you can watch the video and see he wasn't the same. mackie shillstone stated that jones was 200 lbs and had 6% body fat after the ruiz fight. he destroyed his body to make 175 and it's amazing he even got away with it once. de la hoya and byrd have recently shown the effects of weight loss in their last fights as well. the weight loss, age and a tough style matchup vs tarver led to the ko. i always felt if jones would have fought johnson right after ruiz, he would have lost. tarver let jones stay in the fight by not being active enough. jones was exhausted early in that fight and sucked it up on that night.

Another thread made with purpose of putting down Marciano. He kills Jones. Marciano fought many heavyweights, and beat about 10 guys better than Jones--Charles, Walcott, LaStarza, Matthews, Moore, Layne, and old Joe Louis, who at that age kills Roy Jones.

    A few points:
    1. Jones got like no chance here, Marciano is one if not the worst match-up for him. Like others already said.
    2. Jones get´s a bit too much critic recently. I´m the fist to throw some stones at his manufactured career and handpicked opponents but let´s face it, he was a tremendous fighter with vey rare athletic ability. Not a superhuman as some seem to think though.
    3. Funny that everybody who picks Marciano feels obligated to point out what a physical freak Jones was.
    4. I thought the "Jones went shot because he lost weight too fast" myth is gone by now. He wasn´t shot against Tarver and Johnson. He came from (one of) his biggest victory(s) and looked as good as eve before those fights. Hindsight is a *****.
    5. :rofl @those people who think Jones would win this one.

Those blows that Rocky would incessantly bombard Jones' biceps and shoulders, forearms, etc., with, would burst blood vessels and wear him down until an even glancing shot to the head would devastate Roy. RJ Jr. would be crushed in this fight.
