Let's say Jones met the 1960 Sonny Liston via the ol' hypothetical time machine instead of John Ruiz, in other words, THAT version of RJJ, that beat Ruiz. Scheduled for 15 (as though this fight would have even lasted 5). I'll say, without anyone else's input that Liston disregards any punches at all from Jones and hurts and finishes him off somewhere in the 2nd round.

I'd say Jones might survive a bit longer MAYBE, his speed could be a pain in the arse here for 3 - 5 rounds i reckon. Mind you Liston only needs one single clean shot for this fight to be curtains or seconds from it.

Little doubt Senya will have Jones boxing rings around Liston.

The fight would be like throwing a scared kitten directly into an attack dog’s cage. Jones would never take this fight.

I don't see Jones doing much against Liston. At least not the version of Sonny who crippled the division on his way towards the title, and NOT the one who fought Clay. Sonny Liston was in no way shape or form anything like John Ruiz. He had the skill, power and aggressiveness to really put the hurt on a smaller fighter like Roy Jones.

I'm surprised no one thinks Jones would be too fast for Liston.

He may be a little tricky for Liston at first, but that jab and reach of Sonny's is going to catch him. Its not like Jones is going to dance all over the ring and never get tagged.

    Not gonna happen.

Liston wins by KO. Pretty unfair match up.

Bert Whithurst (x2) and Eddie Machen took Sonny the distence by moving, moving, moving, I can quite belive that if Roy's sole thought is survival, and he too sticks to Flit and not Hit, he may survive quite a way against a not to mobile Sonny, he may exasaperate the audiance and the Ref, so perhaps he could see out a 10 rounder, but if he lets Sonny trap him on the ropes......

He has the speed but not the height, reach, chin, or jab strength that also carried Clay to his decisive victories.

Jones was and is an incredibly gifted fighter. His victory over Ruiz deserves kudos - but let's keep in mind that Ruiz was probably the most inept and inferior heavyweight 'champion' going at that time. Someone like Wlad or Vitaly Klitschko or Lennox Lewis would have slaughtered RJJ. Liston would have to use his long reach and just his jab might be able to kayo Jones if it lands solidly. Jones has nothing in his arsenal that would discourage Liston.

    Liston KO 3

    Ouch.
Not a fair fight at all. Roy eventually gets caught...but I think he could go some rounds though. But he couldn't take the chance to commit to any of his punches.

Yeah, really. I mean I see this going more like Liston-Patterson than Liston-Clay. Jones might last longer cause he was better on the bike than Floyd, that's about it.

The manhandling that Liston would subject Jone to would rival that which he dealt to Patterson. True Jones had a better reverse gear than Patterson and less fatalism, but that would have only bought him an extra round. Just one extra round. Liston would hurt Jones with everything he's throw at him, even less than flush punches. Liston would hurt Jones with a body shot most likely that would spell the end, and a follow up series of bombs which would amount to overkill. No, it wouldn't be fair at all, but Jones, to many, qualifies as a heavyweight due to his fight with the reluctant, and against Jones, the incompetent John Ruiz. So if they're correct, then it's fair to feed Jones to a monster like Charles Sonny Liston, and let the chips fall as they may.
