Roy Jones vs. Sonny Liston

Even more monumental - what would the posts be like in any and every thread if Jones retired post Ruiz :hey

 

This is the great Sonny Liston, one of the most underated fighters of all time.

Well, Jones would beat just about everybody in that Liston video.

 

He could outpoint Bethea but I can't see him stopping him, I can see him beating Patterson maybe dropping him along the way but then I can see Patterson catching Jones on the ropes (not too difficult, Jones' footwork is quick but ultimately poor) and sparking him but I'd favour Jones on points. Williams would knock Jones out he's just too powerful, he'd stand westphal on his head I think, Machen could go either way and....I don't know who the guy who was knocked through the ropes was so no comment.
However, he'd probably beat them the way he fought ruiz, which is safety first and on points, Liston annihilated those guys and he'd annihilate Jones too. Remember Liston may have been only around 6' or so but he had the same reach as Lennox Lewis and a jab that could (and did) knock teeth out. Jones could last a few rounds but I see Liston jabbing him into a corner and blasting him out of there with that left hook from hell.

 

I believe the guy he KO'd through the ropes was Hurricane Jackson, a guy who was only ranked because of the awful era. Really a punching bag with little offense. I will never understand the cult of Cleveland Williams. He seems completely undeserving of the accolades he receives. Sure, he passed the eye test but he really only looked proficient against horrible competition. A good B-level heavyweight at best and in era that was sorely lacking. Jones most likely KO's him.

 

Watching that vid really shows how Liston had LONG arms.

There are some spots in the clip where Liston looks like he's standing 4 feet away from somebody in the corner and still bombing them with hooks.

 

Watch also how wide he punched, how many openings he presented and how lumbering- and dare I say slow-he was. Still, he was a physical specimen for the time, too much for the skinny slappers who aspired to the top.

 

Liston knocked Marshall down and he was on all fours barking like a dog . Marshall got up and let go while Sonny was laughing ,result broken jaw Liston said he never laughed in the ring again.

 

Would be a carbon copy of RJJ's fight with Lennox Lewis.

 

McVey always has quality comments. Very doubtful Jones would ever try barking like a dog....but who knows...this is boxing.

 

He's a good un', that was some side splitting stuff hahahaha.

 

Well, he's been a **** in the ring before (James Toney eat your heart out :-(( ), why not try imitating a *****?

If RJJ thought that a stunt like that would get positive publicity or showcase his ring prowess, I reckon he'd try it.
