Liston was pretty fast for his size at that time. He even hit Ali with some good shots in their first fight. Would make short work of Jones.
Actually, Floyd Patterson stood 6'-0" tall, and Roy Jones only about 5'-9". Floyd was physically bigger than Roy with broader shoulders and chest. Sonny Liston would have mauled and physically hurt Roy Jones in the brief moments before putting him down for the ten count.
See the first Liston -Patterson ko. In the moments just before Liston landed that left hook ko punch, he mauled Floyd into position near the ropes for that ko. Liston was way, way too strong for Jones and the ko would have been preceeded by the same type of physical mauling, Ali had the size factor on his side in addition to the speed and skill. A smaller man, no matter how fast or skillful would NEVER beat a big, powerful physical specimen like Sonny Liston.
A nervous and panicky referee stops the fight in the 1st round after Liston brutally manhandles Jones and decks him hard with a jab.
liston by KO. all it takes is one good shot and jones would get knocked out. interesting match up though, jones would probably be running for a while, but if he decides to trade with sonny, he's doomed. Liston just has everything over him besides speed and he would certainly wouldn't stand a chance.
