I think that Jones should've went to cruiser which was 190 at the time after beating Ruiz. That is when he should've fought Toney for the crusierweight title.
Yes and usually he could get away with it because of his speed and reflexes. Why did he keep a high guard against Trinidad and Calzaghe? Because he was wary of getting punched. Why did he not employ a high guard against Green? Because he thought he was levels above him. That turned out to be foolish. Entiende?
Just give it up. The left hand low is the style Jones used his whole career. He tried to adapt with hands up but his ability to counterpunch and get off his signature quick lead left hooks were affected as a result. Saying Jones fought the wrong fight against green is like saying Gatti fought the wrong fight against Ward in their first fight. That's Roy's style, it's what works for him, but he got caught. It is what it is.
You're talking like green dominated Roy over 12 rounds. At the end of the day Roy's punch resistance is gone, he got caught with a shot to the back of the head which finished him.
If a fighter is found to have a Glass Jaw and wants to continue as a fighter, the first adaptation he should make is to keep his hands up. This is clear.
actually when Roy was hit the first time he put his hands up and was hit on the back of his head. I am more surprised at the punch which really hurt him badly. Usually you can see the punch which does that cleanly, but in this case you heard it.
Apparently Roy Jones called Hopkins right after the fight and said: "Don't worry, 60-40 I STILL whoop yo ass"
I have only seen it once on the news so it's not really that clear, but to me, it looked like he wasn't even hit clean with the glove, but with the inside of Green's wrist which isn't padded. Probably just my crappy vision, it may just have been the glove sliding around the back of his head after the initial legal contact due to momentum but anyway, that's how it looked to me which could account for it taking such a heavy toll on Jones. All that aside, saying Jones has a glass jaw is like saying because Sylvester Stallone is Rocky, he is a boxer! It just ain't true and you're living in a fantasy world if you think that! :deal
He still will be remembered as such. Problem is that RJJ was more "physical gifts" than "boxing skill". When father time started taking the gifts back RJJ started getting exposed. IMHO nobody and I mean NOBODY could beat a prime RJJ.
