When Roy Jones beat Ruiz for the heavyweight title he slapped on quite a bit of beef. He subsequently had to lose that meat for the fight with Tarver.
This was a fight that he won, just. The next 3 fights he lost quite badly. The lack of performance and the defeats were blamed on the loss of so much muscle after the Ruiz fight. My question is: Why was his first fight after Ruiz not his worst?
Surely the rapid loss of weight would have been a bigger factor in his first fight with Tarver? By the time he had rematched Tarver, then fought Johnson and Tarver again surely he would have got this weight thing sorted and his body should have adjusted? Doesn't appear to have been the case.
    Thoughts.

Roy Jones should have stayed at heavy and risked a fight against Lewis cause the move down in weight not only cost him fights but if cost him his top ATG status.

I just can't get my head round the fact that everyone says the weight loss was behind his defeats to tarver and johnson, surely his first fight with tarver would have been difficult to shift the weight safely.

Roy was past his prime when he won the heavyweight title, dropping the weight at that point in his career was a bad idea that took permanent effects on his body in my opinion. As for the first fight with Tarver, Jones showed a lot of heart to pull off the victory but Tarver could have won if he just did more. A victory over Roy was there for the taking in that fight, Tarver just failed to do it.

    Cause Tarver didn't do enough.

The same Roy turned up to all 3 fights, Tarver just wasn't as sharp as he should have been on the 1st outing.

Tarver just caught him. Maybe he was a little past it.

Ruiz didnt try? He just let some smaller man come up and take his belt away from him?

I think it was more about how the weight loss aged him and he couldnt fight exactly how he used to

That "fight" if you even want to call it that was a joke. It was basically a glorified sparring session. Were you saying Jones was past his Prime after that fight? I doubt it. Funny how he was only past his Prime when that Glass Jaw got shattered twice in a row.:rofl

Archie Moore used to go up and down in weight from Heavyweight back down to light heavyweight all the time. For example he was 173 for his 1954 title defense KO against Harold Johnson. In his next fight he scaled 196 to beat Nino Valdez. 1 month later he weighed 175 to knock out Bobo Olson, then 3 months after that he challenged Rocky Marciano weighing 188. In 13 months he had a 26 pound weight variation, succesfully defended his title against two different undisputed world champs, beat the number one rated heavyweight contender in the world, and challenged an ATG for the heavyweight championship.
Jones went from 193 to 175 in 8 months once, and it made all that much of a difference?

These nuthuggers on here act like Jones is the only fighter in history to go up and down in weight. He had PLENTY of time between the Ruiz and Tarver fights to get readjusted. It is just excuses for that fragile Glass Jaw of his.

He lost those fights because he got cracked on his Glass Jaw and Calzaghe schooled him with speed. It had NOTHING to do with weight. Like I said there have been 100's of fighters to go up and down in weight and back in the old days they fought 5 or 6 times a year there were not 6 or 8 months between fights.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that Jones is the only one to suffer from this? It is an excuse. The guy is a Glass Jawed fraud.

That is amazing. The weight changes, the high level of competition, the frequency of fights. We'll never see that again.
