How does it feel to be uneducated? And I mean that in the broadest sense.

 

Couple of things/. Roy destroys and stops SRL. at middle or super middle. Leonard's style of boxing did not provide s good angle for him to move up and beat a peak ROY. Ray took many right hands from slower weaker punching opponents. Vs Roy he would get slaughtered because of Roy speed reach, awkward ness.

Think about how Kalule landed, hearns , Geraldo etc.

Now to address the age old debate Floyd vs Leonard - Floyd longevity has to be factored in, and at 130-135 he was destroying and stopping top fighters EASILY. BUT after Diego many if not most of floyds top wins were flawed:

Canelo - catchweight
Jmm - 130 pounder at time forced to move up to 144, a fight Floyd didn't make weight in
Pacman - 36 , 5 years removed from peak , 2 recent losses including one by stoppage
Mosley - 38- recent losses
DLH - 36 - several receive losses including one by stoppage
Hatton- jr welter - totally horrific outing at welter 3 fights before mayweather. Looked awful almost got stopped in final rounds. Immediately acknowledges he was not string enough at 147 to be as effective as he was at 140. Floyd refused to fight him at 140

No fights on his resume vs fighters with reach advantage. DLH had equal reach.


Compare this to peak Ray -Duran 1-1 Duran top 5-10 all time fighter was only 28-29 and continued to win titles after the Leonard fights
Benitez - 38-0-1 when they fought. Peak two time champion. Went on to win belts at higher class. Considered by many a top 50 all timer

Hearns - 32-0 with 30 ko's - all time great was peak and went on to win titles at heavier weight classes

Hagler - was 32. No losses in last 10 years. Ko'd every recent opponent except Duran including Mugabi in the fight leading up to their fight. Mugabi was 25-0 with 25 ko's at mostly jr middle.

Also Ray took on all comers peak didn't duck anyone. Floyd has never accepted a fight vs a fighter with a reach advantage over him, which is a issue several trainers point out as a leading reason to whom he choses do that his defensive low output potshoting styke can be effective. With reach advantage he dictates many things vs shorter arm fighters and can simply lean back out of the way of punches, then twist and counter with out taking a step to punch.

That being said- Floyd is a all time great, I just have Ray ahead due to top wins over peak greats vs floyds accomplishments.

Money is a all time great. Top 20 imo, but after Diego his wins did not come against great fighters at their peak and/or proven weight where they were great. Not 1.


So your left comparing the longevity of Floyd, his body of work which is very good, and his dominance of very good fighters at the 130-135 limit then careful and timely selection of fighters at the WW limit and above

Compared to

A 36 fight ( up until Hagler) stretch of Leonard's. The rest of rays career Duran 3, hearns 2 , Lalond etc was garbage.

Floyd truthfully has Ray beaten in a lot of areas. Longevity, more wins vs world champions, successful weigh classes with more fights in each north of beginning weight class. However there are many things that you can easily point too that led to this.

1- Ray forced to retire early
2- different era's. Each weight class now has 3-4-5 champions, vs 2-3 back in Ray era.
3- quality of champions - the ghost, maidana etc these type of fighters would not be top ranked or champions back when Ray fought.
4- Floyd careful handpicking of past prime fighters as he moved up or avg fighters or weight issues (jmm and Canelo). To be fair when ray came back he handpicked fighters too. But the 88 version of Ray and beyond is not anything special just like the Leon spinks and after vs of Ali, or the faded vs of Robinson, Chavez,Jones, Duran etc. all peak were too 10 in my opinion, but the faded versions were not. So to be consistent I'm looking at the version of Ray Olympics til Hagler. That fighter imo was a all time great even with limited fights. The fights he engaged in ftom 1979 til 81, then coming out of retirement after 5 years with only one fight and beating ( that's what the record books say so we can't use personal opinion, it's a W) Hagler at middle elevates him beyond a mayweather that can respond with several reasons why he should be rated higher.

It's personal preference in these things and the era you as a person grew up idolizing. I have many friends from Michigan age 30 or so that swear Floyd is Tbe. Nothing anyone can tell them different. Lol
