Roy Jones never ran. wtf are you talking about? Roy was superb at taking angles, his leg movement and reflexes to go with it was really something special. Because of that he would hit guys from every angle.

Really though.. All this Roy-bashing "Roy aint fought nobody"-**** has to stop. He could not fight everyone, and it is quite possible that those guys weren't interested in fighting Jones (for obvious reasons). Fact is that he fought comparable (if not better) opposition to the names that comes up, and won convincingly. Roy was never close to losing a fight untill he got old.

More talented??? No ****ing way, better to watch? Yes, if you solely watch boxing for flair and KO's

Id be amazed to see posters who talk about great defences and great chins come into this thread and back RJJ over PBF.

I think the way Mayweather defensively beat Hatton at his own game on the inside was far more impressive than say RJJ catching Toney off balance

Impressive doesnt always have to be a KO, impressive can be adapting to what is put infront of you, and beat it...PBF does that better than anyone i have ever watched.

Tell me that PBF would get beat TWICE by the same opponent? I doubt it, because his chin is better P4P than RJJs and he has a far far better boxing brain from what i have seen of both, and thats seen enough to make a case

Its very easy to say 'Yes' in this thread, i like good defense as much as i like good offence so my answer is No

Well lets examine what you have said. PBF wouldn't lose 2 times to the same opponent. Get back to me when he is 34 yrs old. We can discuss this then.

Adaptation? Jones may or may not have been great at adapting in his prime. Fact of the matter is it wasn't relevant because fighters had to adapt to him, not the other way around, no matter how much larger they were and no matter the style they employed. We do know that Jones seemed to know exactly what to do to beat an opponent, even if they changed tactics on him once plan A didn't work. So my guess is he could adapt just fine. His ring generalship and pacing were off the charts.

And the last, the famous "Jones has no skills" etc or any variation of it. Athleticism cannot teach you the fundementals of boxing. Jones had amazing footspeed. But he also had amazing footwork....he was never off balance like Hamed, who was physically gifted, but not technically. Jones had amazing reflexes to dodge punches. But that doesn't equal head movement, which is the ability to know WHERE to move his head to avoid a punch. His counter ability was aided by his great speed. But his accuracy, punch variety and placement were all skills that are learned. Jones rarely got hit cleanly....rolling with punches is a skill. He was a very skilled defensive fighter. Just not textbook.

Fact of the matter is, if you list what you are looking for in a boxer, defining the word "skills", Jones had them in spades. He augmented his skills with athleticisim and created a style that was very hard to counter with it. When he got old, he refused to adapt or change his style, which relied on this athleticism to work, and thus he is no where near what he once was. But he was and remains very skilled. Listen to him talk about the game when he commentates. He knows it and knows it well.

he had that one punch ability to knock you out. plus his reflexes were amazing. at the time more impressive. but mayweather by far is now more impressive because of his mastery of skill to go along with the reflexes

So what?? Sure he was incredibly gifted, but time and time again we've been shown that to be a successful boxer, well ****, you have to be great BOXER, not just a gifted athlete. Jones of course had a great run, but as soon as his body began to break down, he lost it, and was knocked out twice.

I think what makes Mayweather more special than Jones is that Floyd has the potential to be a great fighter for a few more years to come. Even after he loses some of his speed and reflexes, Floyd can rely on his boxing skills, his superb defensive skills, and if nothing else, Floyd has such a great head for the sport, he will be able to THINK his way towards finding a way to beat an opponent for years to come - if he chooses to fight for that long!
