Exactly smoke and mirrors. You defending Jones by citing say...Gonzales going on to beat a declined Dariusz a few years after losing to Jones is the equivalent of being impressed by a kid pulling a rabbit out of his hat at a talent show. Or lets say Collins losing to Reggie Johnson 7 years before losing to Jones is being awe struck when your uncle produces a quarter out of your ear. Don't be a mark. This is hack magic. Jones beat some good fighters after Toney, but after that, none of the match ups that needed to happen, happend.
I'm expressing my frustration at a fighter regarded as the best in the world spending the best years of his career clowning bad, average, and a few good fighters when there was bigger fish out there. If you sat back and enjoyed Jones run, than I don't blame you, he was very entertaining. But was it frustrating to never see him in the ring with someone else rated P4P, another serious threat, a lineal Champion or top guy. Absolutely. The closet we got to any intrigue was Griffin surprising him in the first fight. What fights? I wanted to see Jones/Dariusz for the true LHW Championship, I wanted to see Jones/Hopkins II for the true P4P King..etc.
But when did you want to see that? When Jones was at his best (mid to late 90's), Hopkins had more then once chance at a rematch. It certainly wasn't going to be a huge fight back then. Benn fight was always going to tough to make, these things aren't always easy. Michalczewski fight was missed, but the blame can't be all on Jones for that fight. What other fights were missed at 175?
Who were the bigger fish, that were available? Let's have the names. How could you have seen a Dariusz fight, if Dariusz wouldn't leave Germany, and Roy wouldn't travel to Germany? Don't forget that Roy had been robbed in the Olympics, and we all saw Dariusz's shameful dive against Roch. How could you have seen Hopkins II, when it was Hopkins who killed the fight by demanding 50/50, even though Roy would had to have moved down in weight, and he'd already beaten him? If you're upset that those fights didn't materialise, then blame Dariusz and Hopkins. Was it not intriguing for you, to see how Roy would fare against a 226 pound HW, who'd had close fights with Holyfield, who still had something left in the tank? Roy was 34, and he'd fought 50 times. Nobody knew for sure how the extra weight would affect him, or what would happen if Ruiz caught him. Was it not intriguing to see how Roy would fare against a rangy, southpaw who was unbelievably motivated, after he'd burnt muscle in a hurry, at almost 35? Roy's got a good resume. Yes, it could have been better. But that's not all on Roy. If things had turned out differently, we could have seen Dariusz, Hopkins II, Liles, Calzaghe and Holyfield etc added to it.
It does make you laugh when people complain about Jones not getting enough credit in their opinion, but then trying to say him losing by DQ for hitting a fighter when he was down " doesn't really count." And they think that those of us who DON'T suck his genitalia have an agenda. So its ok for him to foul, take steroids, blame everyone else for fights not happening, and other assorted nonsense, but don't anyone DARE mention these things. Yeah right. It's becoming a close run race for the headless chicken award between Jones fan boys and Tyson freaks. Pac****s have been left far behind.
It's not that it didn't count, it's that it wasn't at all relevant. Roy was deservedly disqualified. I don't know what went though his mind. But it was just a win on paper. He didn't beat Roy because he was a better fighter. That's the point.
It's a fluke and maybe a play acting fluke, it's not like Jones was beat even if he officially lost. If Jones didn't break the rules in the heat of the moment a KO was clearly coming.
Not only did Gonzalez beat him but Dariusz needed dodgy officials to escape with a win against Hall but he avoided all the top contenders after Hill. Yes Collins got beat clearly by Reggie Johnson and McCallum. Yet that's the fight you wanted a slow none punching head first unskilled tough man??? Benn got beat by Malinga twice (Malinga was robbed in the first). Malinga has a decent case for beating Eubank too. A Toney rematch didn't happen because Griffin beat Toney and in turn Harding beat Griffin and Tarver. And for the record the managers/promoters of Dariusz/Benn/Eubank didn't want it, Eubank didn't want it himself and admitted as much. The key factor here is Jones not wanting to sign with King who controlled Benn, Nunn, McClellan etc etc. Jones made 1 off offers to King fighters but Kind demanded Jones sign a multi fight deal to fight them. You can't blame a fighter for not signing his life away to Don King. :deal
Hopkins didn't want to see that one. He knows his boxing, knew his limits and knew he'd get embarrassed so ran from an overly generous offer. Hops knew there was easier PPV fish to fry with the Trinidad rematch and Delahoya fights around the corner
Correct. He only fought Roy, when he knew he was done. Have you read this before? http://www.doghouseboxing.com/Benz/Benz_1112a08.htm Yet he went on to settle the score in April, 2010. He had no intentions of fighting Roy in 2002. :good
General Zod informed me that Hopkins wanted a rematch in 96, but they were two divisions apart, just like in 2002. He was never really relevant to Roy. Roy had nothing to prove by dropping weight and fighting him again. IMHO, Hopkins only moved to LHW, when he knew Roy was past his best. MindReader has told me that Hopkins has admitted in the past, that he could have moved up to LHW much sooner. The whole argument that they had on HBO was a joke. Why would the unified LHW champ, have wanted to fight a MW who he'd already beaten, for 50% of the purse? I think Hopkins was just massaging his ego in public. IMHO, he knew he couldn't beat Roy back then.
Not sure what weight they fight at in 1996, but I would assume 168. But if I remember correctly instead of fighting Hopkins, Jones went on and fought McCallum. Also when Jones fought Otis Grant, I thought that was a possible Hopkins fight as well that didn't happen. I could be wrong on that one.
