Roy Jones's Resume : A Defence

It's not just Roy, it's the lack of resumes worth a damn PERIOD. I posted a thread asking for the best resumes in boxing post 1960 the thing went practically unanswered until Sweet Pea chimed in with this

THAT my friends is a resume. I'm not one these guys that gives everything to old school fighters but **** man, they don't make resumes like that any more. Way too many people scared to risk their zeros and actually fight each other.

 

I think the game the way it is lends itself to weaker resumes than in past eras.

Fighters can hide behind belts, duck people and cherrypick opponents and titles. In the past you either had to man up, change weight division or **** off.

It is probably the only thing I like about the ams - one title and no ducking

 

Don't see the correlation there. Using my example and replacing those names doesn't discredit Trinidad at all. As while you can say he could have fought Mosley and moved up to avoid him that clearly isn't the case.

The real difference between these 2 scenario's is that Jones left a competitive division to fight in another weight class which lacked the same depth in talent. Unlike Trinidad who was forced to move up due to weight issues to a division that you could argue was equally deep as welterweight.

If Glen Johnson is being listed as a high point, that's terrible news for Hopkins' resume strength. Glen got blown out in a fight where he hadn't beaten one top 50 opponent to get it, but instead was brought in because he was spoon fed bums and had an undefeated record. How do you have 32 fights but yet your opponents' total record is below .500? Either you're fighting Reggie Strickland (with an inflated loss number to skew it), or your opposition generally blows. And Glen didn't fight Reggie Strickland.

Given how you love to rip on Calzaghe, I find it hilarious that you look at the 32-0 Glen Johnson as if he were anything more than a journeyman with a blown up record at that point in time. David Starie, a guy nobody even brings up on Joe's resume, was more accomplished than that at the time they fought.

What he accomplished years after the fact is irrelevant, because somehow I don't see you giving credit to Joe if Manfredo happened to pick up a belt in 2012. The guy who beat Hopkins in his 1st fight isn't going to get hyped because he beat a future 2 weight champion.

Antwun Echols was a better win for Hopkins. At least he'd beaten some decent NABF- level comp before their first fight and had some good wins over other fighters through the course of the trilogy. Then again, having a trilogy with a fighter you're clearly better than doesn't say much about what was available at Middleweight for most of Hopkins' reign, either.

 

Glen Johnson knocked Roy Jones out cold for about 6 minutes.

 

When Benn was finished as a fighter - he was as much of a shell as any fighter I have seen

Damn straight....in 2004. Up until 1997, however, he was busy punishing milkmen and truck drivers for years of pent up bitterness over not getting his dairy products in a timely fashion.

 

Roy's resume is awesome. Alot of fighters on that resume never became what they could because Roy was there when they were in their primes

I saw your post on the first page about Ruiz, you're ******ed.

 

OK he won a title at heavy - but it was hardly akin to Bob Fitzsimmons IMO.

Whilst a great achievement, for it to rank alongside Fitz he would have to have beaten Lennox Lewis or Vitali Klitschko.

His resume is pretty strong in modern terms, but fractured titles allows ducking (both ways clearly) and others hiding behind titles or refusing to fight abroad on principle (can't think of any other reason).

 

Ruiz sucks. Period. He is not a quality win on ANY fighters resume. Why do the Roy nuthuggers try and talk up Ruiz like he is some power punching knock out artist on here? Ruiz is garbage and everyone knows that is why Glass Jaw Roy HANDPICKED him for his fight at Heavyweight.

John Ruiz is one of the if not THE worst Heavyweight beltholder(s) in the past 25 years.
