With that kind of thinking, then Trevor Berbick, Larry Holmes and Leon Spinks are better HWs then Ali.

Prime RJJ(vs toney, early career of 175), would beat Tarver big time.

 

Look, I'm not a Roy Jones fan by any measure, but regardless of his resume Roy was a hellva fighter. He's definitely one of the all time greats. He was truly bless with amazing boxing skills. I seriously don't understand why Jr. gets a bad rap. I can't deny what I saw when Jr. was in his prime.

I really, really dislike Roy as a professional with his showboating. But I'm a boxing scholar, I know greatness when I see it.

If Griffin is his fifth biggest win, I think that does raise some questions about his resume (though IMO, Tarver should be in your list instead of Griff). Griffin was never considered anything special. He got his title shot off of a hotly disputed decision over Toney, and after losing to Roy, never really scored another win of note (deserved or not). In reality, Roy actually made Griffin famous by losing to him, and having a tough time with him in the process.

No question Roy had some big wins, but they were few and far between, with long streches of B, C, and even D level fighters spread out in betwen them. I think his resume would be looked on more favorably if his series with Tarver had gone clear and decisively in his favor, and not been reduced to a mere one razor thin win in three fights.

If he beats Calzaghe, he'll have another nice name to add to his legacy.

 

Yeah, but if RJJ had beaten them like he did the likes of Woods, Gonzalez, etc, how much credit would he have gotten? I would bet almost none.

 

Roy beat Hopkins...... cant take that away from him, fighting each other I believe would always go in that fashion style wise.... Maybe a bit closer in B Hops favor, but there is nothing that makes me believe he would beat a prime Jones.
Roy beat Hill.... Hill was past his best, but in the fashion in which Roy won was amazing... Even the announcers said Hill looked good in the fight, up until Roy landed a piercing body shot. Hill still had enough after that fight to win a belt at Cruiser Weight.

Roy knocked out a top 10 p4p fighter in Griffin, in the first round..... People like to call him a bum, but the fact is, he was the LHW undefeated champ, that beat Toney less than a year earlier, when Roy knocked his ass out in the first round.....

Bad comparison.

Ali had been considered a shell of himself for some time before losing to any of those fighters.

Conversely, Roy was rated more highly than ever, and coming off one of his biggest/best wins ever going into the first Tarver fight.


Any other time a top rated P4P entrant has been suddenly knocked off his perch in recent years, he has it held against him (included Toney when Roy did it to him). Tarver definitely is the victim of a double standard here IMO.

 

One hit wonder? Take away the RJJ wins, which are amazing victories, and he still beat Johnson (i think he won both fights), Griffin, Harding, and Woods.

 

True, you cant take a thing away from Tarver...... The man was motivated, and inspired his whole life to do what he did... For that I give him all the credit in the world.

If he would have beat Harding in the first encounter, I think he would have had a taste of a more pure Roy Jones Jr, but thats not what happened...

 

Roy is the most talented boxer of his generation and one of the most accomplished.

IMO, prime Roy is probably head-to-head the #1 alltime at 168 and 175.

That he was not more accomplished was due in part to the lack of more good competition.

The only fighter that he can remotely be accused of ducking was Darius, and Darius ducked him equally.

He and Calzaghe avoided each other, each for their own reasons.

IMO, Roy would have beaten both, and without too much trouble.

His victories over Hopkins, Toney and Ruiz are all huge.

Who else did he miss ?

His resume is superior to Bernards, and also, IMO, to Toney's.

If he'd hung them up after Ruiz, he would easily have been regarded as a top 10 ATG.

Personally, I don't put much emphasis on his career post-Ruiz.


I think history will judge those fights like they do Ali's bouts with Holmes and Berbick.

Prime Roy would have beaten Tarver and Glenncoffe, both on the same night.

And then played some basket-ball !

He will probably lose to Calzaghe, but that won't say much about either man in the long run.

 

By that reasoning, Vinny Pazienza will always rank a notch above Roberto Duran, since he beat him, twice.

And Berbick will always rank above Ali.

And of course, Terry Norris will always be regarded as greater than SRL.
