I've heard people say that Roy Jones was the GOAT at SMW. Maybe if you meant H2H, but his resume there is lacking. His only notable win there is Toney. Then it's blown-up Pazienza, Antoine Byrd, and Bryant Brannon.
h2h pretty much, but that's because theres not really been a atg in smw yet to put up against that young roy. otkke, no chance outside Germany cheating calslappy likewise without a wales ref to stop the fight when roy slips ward - as yet no froch - outboxed steadily liles - simply not skilled enough toney - already covered resume - no , unless you "project" his resume, in which case hes incompetition with ward, I guess. but then again, who would stay in an unproven new division for long, if they wanted to become a true atg?
Before he fought Toney, he did have a number of fights above the 160 limit of middleweight. But always weighed in around 164-165. Percy Harris (KO4) was the second fight after he broke away from his father and was considered a step up. Glenn Wolfe (KO1) who went 12 rounds with Toney the year before. Malinga (KO6) who later beat Benn. Byrd, Thornton and Brannon were all mandatories. Jones did of course his in ring interview before the Brannon fight. Eric Lucas went on to win a title at 168. Don't think he stuck around long enough at 168, which was some what to bad since I think it was his best weight.
Of course when people claim him to be the best ever at SMW, it's on a head to head basis. You obviously can't place him there on accomplishments. But I honestly don't think he would have been beaten by any SMW in history. He didn't stay long at the weight, due to circumstances. Also, he did have other notable wins apart from Toney. How can you forget his easy wins over Malinga and Lucas? Those wins were notable.
Was the Thomas Tate win at 160 lbs. That was an impressive win considering Tate gave Julian Jackson a tough fight.
Lucas one is interesting to me because of how much Jones was criticized for fighting him at the time. That and fighting him on the same day as playing the basketball game. Probably a large reason for the interview pre Brannon fight.
Roy made decent fighters look like nobodies. Eric Lucas was a decent fighter, and he was considered as a viable opponent for Joe Calzaghe in the early 00's.
Ya, he was a tough, took a lot of punishment. Jones wanted to go into the later rounds with that fight as well.
Let it be known that Jones ducked almost every threat in his career. The best defense is composed of at times subtle and at times not so subtle managerial and promotional maneuvers. Jones, Leonard, Ali, Mayweather and Tyson were the best at it that I have ever seen.
