Roy Jones's win over Antonio Tarver looks better in retrospect

It's difficult for fighters to move down in weight at a later age. Ray Leonard in his mid 30s got hammered for 12 rounds by Terry Norris. Chris Byrd was used as a punching bag recently by Shaun George. Oscar at 35 was sodomized by a guy moving up two weight classes.

Roy got KO'd twice in 2004, but at least before that, he did score a close but fair decision over the consensus #1 LHW contender when Jones had moved up.

That was a good win in retrospect, although he was sort of criticized at the time. At least he got in a good win before really hitting the wall.

Yeah the fact that Roy in his weakned state was able to pull out a win when hes never actually had to ever dig down to win one was amazing. I remember that PPV that night Roy looked kinda sick in the locker room and Merchant asked him "Roy on a 1 to 10 scale how do you feel going into the fight" he responded with a 7. Thats pretty low for a pro fighter in a big match but give his due for being able to pull out that last great win of his career sucks that he is basically done but to me thats one of his finer nights for what he had to endure before and during the fight yet he pulled out a clear victory.

I also think people forget about that fight when saying the reason he got ko'd is because he was shedding the weight of the ruiz fight.... he had already had a fight at that weight before that fight, being tarver 1.

Well the weight loss had its effect. His reflexes were diminishing and I still feel his resistance wasn't good at that point, but that point is sort of a moot point seeing as though he took everything Tarver throw in the first fight. Really his problem was that he got caught by a punch he didn't see that wouldn't have happened if he was not as he was. And after that he couldn't pull the trigger like he could, the damage to his body was done. psychologically he was finished.

What I never understood was how people said Roy had no chin after the 2nd fight -- but completely forget that the 1st fight happened, in which case Roy took all his shots and was never really seriously hurt, I only saw him stunned like once, in the 6th or 8th round.

Similar things happen with any field of sport, even things like skateboarding. After taking a nasty fall, some can never do tricks like they once could. They just don't respond the same.

I thought he looked terrible, and got a beating in the process of winning the fight.

I really wonder whether people overstate this.

Byrd was at HW for years, DLH was weighing in at his lowest weight for 12 years or something.

Jones had one fight at heavyweight, where he weighed in at 193lbs.

Cutting that much weight is done by many fighters as a matter of course. I expect Ricky Hatton has cut that much weight in many a training camp. By way of comparison, David Haye fought one fight at HW before returning to CW for Mormeck and Maccarinelli, and was 218lbs, exactly the same amount over the his normal limit as Jones was for his heavyweight fight.

Yeah that was his last good fight and even that one was pretty close.

I couldnt believe all those people saying he could beat calzaghe this fall. **** he hasnt looked good in 5 years, hes been done for a long time, I cant believe people couldnt recognize that.

LMAO. How can you compare Ricky hatton to roy jones? Hatton blows up with FAT through unhealthy llifestyle. Fat is easier to lose than muscle. David haye put on NATURAL weight. Jones NEVER was a heavy weight and bulked up like 25lbs of PURE muscle which he had to strip. Which left his body completely spent. Have you even seen the condition he was in for Ruiz? Definately not at 193lbs. So no, it is not an overstated FACT.

What do you mean 'definately not at 193lbs'? That's what he weighed in at. Yeah I had already considered those points. Whether or not Jones did it the right way or not is of course open to question. It's still not comparable to De La Hoya going down to a weight that he had not been at for 12 years.

He weighed him self before and after the 'official' weigh in and was around about 202lbs. He was absolutely ****ing huge no way 193lbs. He even acknowledged this himself. Jones losing all that weight hindered him more than DLH.
