Well when Barkley beat Hearns he did not become a legend. Hearns was the legend. I think Green has to now prove this fight was legit against a younger legit fighter. I doubt Hopkins would be knocked out like that.
I'm hating to see all these generalizations about roy greatness. We all know boxing is 1 match at a time, 1 punch at a time. I'm convinced the ref did his job but in a VERY conservative fashion. None of greens head shots were landing after that, judging by Roys foot work and tight defense he was just waiting out the storm like the veteren would and like we've seen over a 100 times before. Had it been some of those lenient and educated Neveda judges, I believe Roy would of came back after round 1 ended.
I don't see this. The ref stopped it when Green landed two left hooks and Jones legs were wobbling again. Jones would have been stopped eventually, the ref did him a favor, and still some might say he let it go on too long. This was not like Weaver/Dokes, Jones got wobbled again after going down the first time.
better watch it againatsch. count the uppercuts and right hooks that cleanly landed on jones. problem is jones doesn't know how to grab & hold till he recovers.
I just watched it 3 more times. I'm still not convinced he was in as much danger as the ref percieved, but it was still a sensible call i guess. If there was a 1-10 danger scale I would of rated that an 8.5. He was still balanced while coherently defending a brutal onslaught and some experienced officials will give veterens benefit of the doubt. As seen in the Calzaghe fight with Roys Cut. Green snatched the victory from focusing hard after a suprise KD and all the props to him for that aswell. Showed a lot of professionalism. The referee was just a tosser from this fans point of view. Good similarity with the Weaver-Dokes. That was Weavers fault he got stopped.
Roy still fights with his lead hand resting on his thigh. Guess he learned nothing from the Johnson ko.
That's exactly my point. Roy's "prime" passed a long time ago and he can't afford to leave hiimself open like that anymore. His reflexes and timing just aren't there. The fact that he got sparked out by a fighter of Johnson's caliber was obvious evidence of that.
the problem with Jones with Green is that he covered up, but he was taking really big body punches which would have slowed him down big time later, but regardless of that Green was hitting gloves but when he landed that uppercut when he was swarming Jones, Jones right leg wobbled. Interesting how Jones right leg is the leg which was giving out more. But everytime Green landed anything clean uppercut or right or left, Jones was hurt. Every landed punch was hurting Roy. It was just a matter of time. Jones would have ended up on the canvas. That ref did him a favor.
By the way, yeah Green really came on strong after he knocked down Roy you right. Very aggressive. If it was a flash knockdown it would have been a mistake, but I think he knew Roy could't take a big punch so he pored it on. That was a full swarm. Reminded me a little of Dokes/Weaver, but also round 5 of Leonard/Hearns when Ray had Tommy hurt, but Ray really had a hard time hurting Hearns. It was interesting.
