Surprisingly never been a (properly constructed) poll thread done on these guys, and the h2h matchup has only been mooted a few times, once apiece in Classic and General:
    https://www.boxingforum24.com/search/57225572/?q=Roy+Saul&o=date&c[title_only]=1

(plus twice more in the General forum using just the nickname without any portion of Álvarez's real name, posited for MW in 2018 and super middle last November)

Let's say 12 rounds @ light heavyweight - not because I consider either man a natural 175lber or at their personal very best in the division, but simply for the sake of simplicity - given that Canelo is campaigning there currently, about to face Bivol for the WBA strap and RJJ spent the back-end of his prime and you might say "peak fame" years with several of his most prominent rivalries there, despite incurring several losses (Tarver rematch & rubber-match, Glen Johnson, Calzaghe, and Hopkins rematch)

    Funtime has a firm opinion:

Canelo stands no chances. He wouldnt be koed, though. I wouldnt favor many fighters over roy jones at lhw, let alone canelo who is not a lhw. But anyway, in lower weights I think jones wins the same way too.

I assume we are not talking about shot to pieces jones, btw. I talk about undefeated jones (without counting the DQ)

roy jones ring IQ is stupidly high. Higher than canelo's by far. And canelo has a very high ring IQ himself.

Would have looked like a more competitive version of the Pazienza fight.

I’m not even a Jones fan, but he smacks Canelo around all day from all angles.

Canelita is too stationary, roy could just pop that jab all night if he wanted to or just pull another griffin 2 performance.

Canelo gets 12-0'd or stopped late. He'd have no working strategy. He'd try and come forward but that'd only lead to him getting countered shitless and badly hurt. He tries to counter, and he gets beaten to the punch and out boxed all night. He'd be so thoroughly outclassed that he wouldn't have any solution. Jones has also stopped an abundance of iron chins, so if he managed to stop Canelo, I wouldn't be that surprised.

I also hate this narrative that Jones relied on athleticism, or that his fundamentals were poor. Roy Jones Jr. is one of the most prolific ring general's boxing has ever seen, hence why he was able to dominant everybody so easily. Aside from this, he was also one of most creative counter-punchers and trap setters in his weight class's history. His feints were so sharp and precise that he had geniuses like Toney and Hopkins falling for them, and not only that, but he was doing it without setting things up with jab.

    Prime for prime?
I’d lean towards Jones on points but who knows?!

If Steak-Nelo connects that chin … it’s night night for Captain Hook.

would have been a great match up!

Agreed. Canelo would find out early that the speed and counter punching would be too dangerous to open up. He would get 12-0'd because he would just run out of ideas. We know that Roy is going to be the boxer here while Canelo will have to track him down. I'm not sure if Canelo would ever just go for broke and really up his pace and take risks. Maybe he would take a few risks but I'm sure he would be countered and the left hook by Roy would be a big issue. Eventually I think they would have the unspoken Max Kellerman agreement thing where they both settle for a decision where Roy wins.
