Stonerose, when you have been here a bit longer, you will understand what he means. There are at least a couple of guys who have voted for Jones who are basically the kiss of death to whichever side of the argument they join. ******s of the very highest calibre.
its close but i'll go for whitaker just cos he was a total joy to watch, cheeky as **** and i'd say more technically proficient . better record as well.
people are asked for an opinion and slated for it. we're all equal in this life whether you're an 18 year old boxing bookworm or a casual fan. people are answering a question , a pretty tough question as well. well done, you are a boxing boffin, you dont need to make other people feel ****.
Yawn. You're more sensitive than a 15-year-old girl's clitoris. Maybe after you have had numerous abusive run-ins with certain ignorant and vicious posters on here, you will understand. Until then, desist from acting like some concerned mother goose and don't pass judgement on things you know nothing about.
I have to go for Roy. It seems like Pea is the 'right' answer, and I would say the majority of the hardcore would give him the nod. However I simply cannot look past Roy's 'otherworldly' brilliance - he was on a different plane to almost every fighter that ever laced em up. As a slide asides, I feel that Roy is way underrated these days and Pernell the exact opposite - Pea love appears to be in vogue.
I feel Roy gets his due in head to head posts, but that never seems to equate to all time ranking for him.
Swee'pea had the finer defensive skills, but Roy was alround the better fighter, he was a lot more rounded performer.. Very different guys , but to be appreciated for thier independant ability.. Roy was something else around 1995........ and in 3 fights that i will state as his most determined memorable nights he was incredible, The James Toney Uncivil war........ The scorned and angry ex champs revenge v Montell Griffin II.. and the historical Heavyweight challenge against Ruiz.. 3 fights that were probably the best performances i love of RJJ..........
Its very tight IMO between the two, i use to have jones clearly ahead but i must admit i underrated whitaker quite a lot until recently, there resume are pretty close, the diffrence maker for me between the two would probably be pea's beating of mcgirt and vasquez which are great wins However i rate roy slightly the more talented fighter and give significant kudos to him being a fighter that started at 154 and being a natural 168 fighter winning a heavyweight belt and giving up 30 pounds in weight while doing it, it is a brilliant achievment which i don't think will be properly appreciated till roy retires. For this i would give him the slightest edge over whitaker but it is just slight and i would not argue with someone who sees it the other way
Why roy's resume is not exactly terrible. Hopkins Toney Ruiz Hill McCallum Tarver Griffin Woods Whitaker meanwhile Chavez Nelson Mcgirt Vasquez Haugen Ramirez Mayweather Rivera Whitaker's is better but not by the miles you make out
A fat, past prime, out of shape James Toney did the same thing a couple of years later. When it all comes down to it, he beat John Ruiz. Ruiz was a hugger with little skill, and he wasn't even allowed to hug in this fight, so what exactly was he supposed to do? A much better win on paper than in reality. Had he beaten a decent titlist it would've been a far more impressive achievement. As it is, it really is starting to get more overrated a win than underrated.
If that post were any more smug, I'd venture to say you'd be in San Francisco enjoying the aroma of your own farts right about now.
