I just finished watching the Jones vs. Green bout and was surprised in the way Roy Jones Jr was knocked out. The round started off with Jones circling Green and jabbing him at will; in all of this I noticed Jones left hand was extremely low and then it happened, Danny landing a right hand which sent Jones to the canvas.

It was sad to watch a boxing legend; Roy Jones Jr. struggling to make it to his feet versus Danny Green. If this fight was held 10 years ago; Danny Green wouldn’t have been able to last 1 round versus Jones but that was 10 years ago and this is now. Roy Jones Jr. ignored one of the sport’s most important rule; “The most important thing about winning is knowing when to quit”.

Learning how to let go is one of the most difficult battle a boxer faces in his career. Lennox Lewis’s legacy continues to grow daily by him retiring on top; while other fighters such as Felix Trinidad had 2 failed come back attempts, Holyfield has had several failed run at the heavyweight championship, Hector Camacho comes back every month and Eric Morales is looking to come back this year.

Jones, Trinidad, Holyfield, Vargas and others are inspired by Bernard Hopkins who seems to never grow old but these fighters need to recognize that not all wines get better with age. Jones Jr. has now become Roy “Was” Jr. and should walk away right now while he can still enjoy all of the riches his career has granted him. Do I expect that? No, I expect him to make another homecoming bout at Pensacola; he will say he is back to his old self and faster than ever and expect more from Roy “Was” Jr. Let’s hope I’m wrong.

He's going to end up like Randy "the ram" in The Wrestler. There's still this thing in his mind that he has all the tools. One more fight, one more shot at glory.
